Commemoration of Srebrenica massacre to be held on July 11

Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Commemoration of the Srebrenica massacre will be held on July 11, when newly identified bodies will be buried. In 1995, Serbian forces, according to International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), massacred around 7500 Bosnian Muslims.

A controversy arose after mothers of murdered Muslims in Srebrenica made a statement saying that the Serbian President, Boris Tadi?, is not welcome in Srebrenica: “Tadi? coming to Srebrenica is a planned provocation of the ones who will bury their families on July 11.” The Serbian President will still attend the ceremony.

Abdurahman Malki?, the president of the Srebrenica municipality, guaranteed safety to Tadi? and all other officials. Other attendees include Theodor Meron, the president of ICTY.

So far, 2,032 bodies have been identified. It is expected that by July 11 another 550 bodies will be identified and ready for burial.

Steps Involved With Deck And/Or Patio Construction

By Glover Paul

One way to extend your indoor activities outdoors and integrate the backyard into your daily lives is to add a deck or patio – a deck or patio that emphasizes open air dining and entertainment. From the comfort of your own home, you can enjoy fresh air, cookouts, and all around family fun from one of these and you can do it with the knowledge that it was built to last by professional contractors.

What’s the First Thing to Do?

If you’re new to home additions, it’s natural to be curious about the things that your selected contractor will do. But since adding on a deck or patio is a rather intensive project, your curiosity will soon be satisfied once you begin discussing its plans. Through these plans, both you and your contractor will discuss things like the width of your deck floor, the height of your patio roof, and the materials that your deck and/or patio will be made with. Some of the other things you’ll discuss answer questions like:

1.How high should the patio roof be elevated?

2.What will cover the roof? Shingles? Flat Tar?

3.What will the flooring be covered with? Tile? Concrete?

One very important discussion that you’ll have with your contractor regards your lifestyle. By discussing how you’ll use your deck and/or patio, your contractor can help you design a structure that works well with everyone in the home – even the family pet!

After the Plans

Once you’ve created suitable plans, your contractor will take the appropriate measurements and adjust your plans so that they fit well within your outside space. When your contractor begins to layout your deck’s and/or patio’s foundation, you may hear a lot of hammering, pounding, digging, and sawing. But these are the musical sounds of a beautifully laid out perimeter being born – a perimeter carefully structured according to a depth and width that follows city ordinance code.

Everything Starts With A Good Foundation

Soon after, you’ll witness the artistry of concrete pouring which is an exciting process to watch. There’s mixing, pouring, rodding and jitterbugging all before the final act of smoothing the concrete’s surface. It’s really isn’t that hard get emotional about a concrete slab once it resembles what you’ll soon claim as your patio and/or deck floor!

Three Sides and A Top

After your deck’s and/or patio’s cement floor has set, your contractor will begin to erect the walls around the floor but don’t be surprised if you notice that the walls were pre-built. Excepting walls constructed out of stone or brick, this only makes the arrival of your dream addition quicker (not to mention more efficient for your builders). Whether you’ve decided on screen walls or a wooden fence, you’ll really start to recognize and appreciate the structure for what it’s on its way of becoming.

Now not all decks and/or patios are covered with a roof, however if yours will, its construction is the next step and will probably have all the amenities that the roof of your actual house has (gutters, supports, etc.).

Congratulations!

When complete, your only step is to decorate your deck and/or patio to your heart’s content – complete with potted plants, patio furniture, outdoor lamps and a barbecue pit!

What Is A Listed Artist?

What Is A Listed Artist? By Melanie Annette Smith

You often hear that an artist is listed, so what does this really mean? Basically, it means that an artist has attained a certain level of recognition in the art world.

Just like everyone else, an artist starts their career at the bottom level. They start to show their work by attending local or school shows, having their art in galleries that specialize in emerging artists, listing their art on sites like eBay and Etsy. As their art matures and they develop a signature style, the artist will start winning awards in major shows, have representation in more established galleries, articles written about them and possible museum attention.

This gets the artists noticed by the publishers, curators, art critics or sites that reference these artist. These entities report biographies, dealers and secondary market information. The importance of this is that it validates that the artist is a professional, creates quality art, deserves recognition and has a stronger potential for maintaining or increasing in value.

It’s the same type of progression as a musician that starts playing at the local pub and graduates to large concerts and the cover of the “Rolling Stone”.

During pre-internet days, the major reference books, kind of the “Rolling Stone” for art, that an artist could be listed in were Benezit, Mayers and Who’s Who in American Art. Being referenced in these books qualified the artist as being “listed”. Publications in which an artist paid to be referenced in do not qualify the artists for this distinction.

Today there are major art reference web sites (most are subscription based for all or part of the information). If an artist is referenced on these sites, they are considered as “listed”. The major sites are AskArt, ArtPrice, ArtFact and ArtNet. It is very easy to verify if an artist is “listed” by checking these sites. These sites are constantly being updated with new information.

Picasso, Rembrandt and Van Gogh are examples of “listed” artists. Very few listed artists achieve their level of recognition, but this does illustrate that not all listed artists are created equal. Some are much more famous than others.

Just because an artist is not listed does not mean that they are not a creative and accomplished artist, but a “listed” artist has the added confirmation and recognition of their talent.

Most artists never receive this recognition and sometimes, not until after they have passed away.

Kentucky lawmaker in critical condition after fight in high school cafeteria

Saturday, April 16, 2011

One of Kentucky’s newest state lawmakers, who also serves as a high school teacher, sustained a critical head injury Tuesday morning while intervening to break up a fight between two students in the school’s cafeteria.

State Representative DeWayne Bunch (R), 49, was listed in “extremely critical” condition when he was taken to the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Kentucky, immediately following the fight between two male teens.

Bunch was reported as being unconscious and bleeding from the ears when emergency responders arrived at Whitley County High School.

The fight, between a fifteen- and sixteen-year-old, was caught by a surveillance camera which showed Bunch being punched by the sixteen-year-old, according to the sheriff. It is not clear what started the fight, which took place in the school’s cafeteria during breakfast.

The teens have been charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault. They are both in custody at a juvenile detention center according to the sheriff.

Bunch was later transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. His family has requested no information be publicly released about his condition.

Jamaica: Violence kills at least 30

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Authorities in Jamaica say that gunfights in the capital Kingston have left at least 30 people dead, as hundreds of troops and police search for an alleged drug kingpin wanted by the US. At least 25 people were injured as well.

The violence has been triggered by the Jamaican government’s efforts to extradite Christopher “Dudus” Coke, the alleged leader of the “Shower Posse” group. Armed security forces stormed the Tivoli Gardens slum of western Kingston on Monday in an effort to locate Coke, who has not been found. Last week, Coke’s supporters barricaded the area in an attempt to thwart his arrest.

The trouble has forced the closure of schools and businesses across the capital, and the government has appealed for blood donations for the wounded. A state of emergency is in effect for parts of Kingston.

The US has issued a travel alert to warn citizens against visiting the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding has promised “strong and decisive” action to restore order.

Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

Saturday, April 17, 2010

In a new setback to the Thai government’s efforts to ease mounting political tensions, protest leaders escaped from their hotel Friday after security forces arrived to arrest them.

One, Arisman Pongruangrong, climbed down three floors using a rope, and was rushed away by supporters thronging the building. The police say Arisman led recent rallies at the national parliament, the election commission, and satellite transmission bases.

Officials earlier Friday said the government is preparing to arrest people linked to violent clashes with security forces last Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Thai security chief, announced the raid on the hotel as it was unfolding, saying that a Special Forces unit had closed in around a downtown Bangkok hotel.

“As I am speaking, the government’s special team is surrounding the SC Park Hotel, where we have learned that there are terrorists and some of their leaders hiding,” Suthep said.

A spokesman for the governing Democrat Party, Baranuj Smuthararaks, says arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of being involved in the violence. Some of the suspects have been identified from photos taken during the clashes.

“Right now the government’s focusing on issuing warrants for acts of terrorism by the people who fortunately have been captured in action [in photos] by both the local and international media,” he said.

According to the New York Times, as many as five protest leaders had been staying at the same hotel as Pongruangrong. Those leaders later appeared together at a protest rally in Bangkok.

“I would like to thank all of the people who saved me,” Arisman said. “You have saved democracy.”The government says armed men infiltrated protester ranks Saturday and fired on troops trying to disperse a rally. Five soldiers and 19 protesters died during the clashes.

Thailand is facing its most severe political crisis in almost 20 years. The anti-government movement, led by the United Democratic Front against Dictatorship or UDD, demands that the government step down and call fresh elections.

UDD supporters, known as red shirts, have held protests in Bangkok for more than a month.

The UDD largely supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and remains overseas to avoid a jail sentence for corruption. Mr. Thaksin has strong support among the rural and urban poor, as well among some sections of the army and police.

Some parties in the governing coalition want to set a clear time frame for elections to ease tensions. But the government says it will only call elections once the political situation has cooled.

Public disclosure made of final report on deaths of nine in Finnish school shooting

Friday, April 18, 2008

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation yesterday released 600 pages of the 2,000 page final report into the Jokela school shooting. 18-year-old Pekka-Eric Auvinen opened fire at Jokela High School, killing eight before turning his gun on himself, receiving fatal wounds.

The remaining 1,400 pages of the report are to remain confidential. The public section reveals a number of problems that may have impacted on Auvinen’s decision to conduct the attack, but says that police failed to find any conclusive motive. Also released was an animation depicting events at the school.

The report says Auvinen had been bullied since the age of ten and concludes the extent of this problem was greater than previously thought. Auvinen suffered from anxiety and blushing, especially in lessons, and had been diagnosed with a panic disorder, for which he had been prescribed medication. Auvinen also suffered from sleep disorders and loneliness, and had few friends, although one former bully did go on to become a good friend of Auvinen’s. His mother said inability to settle on a suitable ideology contributed to Auvinen’s depression.

His parents had noticed and reacted to the bullying problem, but their intervention only served to worsen the situation. According to entries in Auvinen’s diary, he first began planning the shooting – which he gave the English name “Operation Main Strike” – about eight months prior to actually conducting the shooting.

Auvinen had told his mother that under certain circumstances he could approve of violence. He had often viewed web sites promoting violence and had a number of online contacts whom he discussed his ideas with. One of these was a United States teen arrested for planning a similar attack, and two others discussed the Columbine High School Massacre with him and traded videos they found online. However, there is no evidence he informed anyone of his plans until immediately prior to the attack.

The report called Auvinen a moderately good student, but noted his mental problems had impacted his performance at school. He had been interested in politics from an early age, being involved with the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Left Alliance, and the Finnish Communist Party.

“In the best case, this (attack) would create massive destruction and chaos, or even a revolution,” read one diary entry. “In any case, I want this to be remembered forever. Maybe I’ll even have a follower; after all, I am a super-person, almost God.” Another revealed he intended to “kill as many of you bastards as possible”. His diary also reveals he was aware he would be dead by the end of the attack.

He obtained a .22 calliber handgun which he named Catherine, having been denied a license for a 9mm gun, and submitted his plans online – including to YouTube – just 14 minutes prior to firing his first shots, having cycled to school. It was determined that, given the time-frame, there was little that could have been done by anyone who saw the material to prevent the attack. He fired 75 shots, 50 of which struck his eight fatally wounded victims, who were apparently chosen at random. Thirteen others were injured in the event.

The deceased were six students, the school headmistress and the school nurse. Auvinen shot at each several times in the region of the head and upper torso. He ultimately shot himself in the school toilet, and died in hospital from head wounds ten hours later, having never regained consciousness.

Police could not determine why he chose the date he did, although it was noted his online relationship with a foreign girl had ended just days before. It was also determined little could be done to predict and prevent future incidents, although one measure being sought is to require medical checks for gun licences and parental consent for prospective owners under 18.

The confidential section of the report discusses causes of death and police operations.
