Biometric Security And The Myths Associated With It

Biometric Security And The Myths Associated With It

by

Claire Winters

It would be natural nowadays to be concerned with biometric security because it has become so relevant in applications of technology and often described in books or even films which have a science-fiction presence. Privacy concerns and government intrusion are popular topics these days, and these fears go hand in hand with the increasing demand for safe, reliable security systems that go beyond the use of a mere lock and key. Long before computer and also finger printing technology, biometrics actually has a long history which is an interesting concept for anyone to imagine.

Biometrics is less of a sci-fi word than it sounds; it really applies to the physical characteristics of an individual that recognize them. Biometrics include such traits of an individual for instance weight, height, color of hair, deformities plus much more. Throughout history, a person’s distinctive characteristics have been used for identity purposes in distinguishing one person from another. Long before the invention of computer technology, records have been used for decades to keep track of individuals in society through things such as driver licenses, social security numbers, address and phone databases as well as work documentation just to name a few.

Physical characteristics focusing on unique and unchanging traits of a individual is essentially what makes up the modern-day form of biometrics security. Height, weight, and hair color can be changed; tattoos can be added and removed; even some physical features and birthmarks can be changed through cosmetic surgery. What biometric companies focus on with their security tools are the characteristics that don t change, such as fingerprints and hand geometry, voice patterns, and the iris and retina.

Scanning and storing the data of features such as these have led to a fear, bordering on paranoia by some, of invaded privacy and increasing government intrusion into our lives. Fueling the fear of the general public, the media has through various movies and books, depicted nightmares people could very well encounter through abuse of this biometric technology which even the slightest might be troublesome. A nameless identity being able to collect or store data of a personal nature is frequently something people would prefer not to happen. Without knowledge or consent, personal information such as face recognition software could be used against any individual in this new age technology giving us all something to possibly worry about. In addition to the typical identity theft via stolen personal information such as social security data, people now worry biological information could be stored and used inappropriately making it easier for identity theft to occur. There is also the fear of this method of technology making mistakes and resulting in false accusations or arrests.

This new technology has drawbacks and mistakes will certainly occur however, the chance of this occurring to a wide number of people is purely a myth. The information scanned into biometric computers by company for security purposes is stored as a numeric algorithm that s only useful for the company s security reader, and can t be utilised by an outside source. Biometric databases for any private business is often unreadable or not accessible to other agencies such as various police departments, trying to access this information so there is a sense of security involved.

Private companies who make use of a biometrics database will often have elaborate security systems in place to stop any breach and allow them to always keep personal stored data safe. The practice of using biometrics for security and identification purposes has been used for a number of years, and the benefits to society have outweighed the supposed risks. Even with the rising public fear related to this technology, new methods are constantly being invented and improved upon in regards to how information is collected and controlled. Many myths surrounding this type of technology can be erased through research and fact checking when it comes to using biometrics for personal and business uses.

London Tube bombs went ‘bang bang bang, very close together’

Saturday, July 9, 2005

After a press conference in London from the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London, more details are emerging about the attacks in London on Thursday.

Data from the Underground system’s power and control systems have revealed that all three bombs went off within 50 seconds of each other, at 8.50am, with the managing director of Transport for London, Tim O’Toole saying the bombs went “bang bang bang, very close together”.

The first bomb to detonate was on the Liverpool Street train soon after it left for Aldgate on the Circle line, seconds before the others. The blast tripped out the power system, visible in the control room. The first call the police received that morning reported “a bang” at Aldgate East, coming within a minute of the blast.

The Edgware Road train, leaving for Paddington and also on the Circle, exploded opposite a train coming from the other direction, making people think at first that it was a derailment. The first call to the Police spoke not of an explosion, but of a person falling under the wheels of the train. The confirmation of a bomb did not come until 9.17am, but by that time the emergency services were already on scene.

Transport for London’s new TrackerNet software is fully opertational on the Circle line, which allows for precise tracking of trains, but is not yet fully installed on the Piccadilly line. The first indication of the Piccadilly line bomb was when the tunnel telephone system wires were cut by the blast, an event logged by other software. The cutting of the lines then tripped out the track current. The tunnel itself suffered only slight damage and is safe, but the train – which was packed with commuters heading for Russell Square – is very badly damaged.

London Underground declared a ‘code Amber’ within minutes, moving trains to platforms and opening all doors. A ‘code Red’ – full evacuation – was set at around 9.15am. O’Toole described the decision to evacuate as being “very grave, not taken lightly”. When questioned as to whether everything possible had been done on the day to save lives, the managing director of Transport for London was “very proud” of the choices made that morning.

As investigations continue, all bodies have been removed from the sub-surface Circle line trains, but the carriages themselves are still in situ while a painstaking forensic investigation takes place.

Currently, work is on-going to retrieve bodies and forensic evidence from the carriage of the train in the deep tunnel of the Piccadilly line near King’s Cross. Teams of rescue workers looking for human remains are working alongside forensics experts in a “meticulous” search to find evidence.

Conditions are described as being very difficult, with high temperatures and lots of dust. Work was halted over Friday night when conditions became too bad, and resumed this morning. Efforts have been made to improve the ventilation.

Work will continue throughout tonight and possibly into Sunday. The exact number of bodies still in the wrecked carriage is unknown.

Access from King’s Cross is impossible, so workers are taking the longer route from Russell Square station to get to the front of the train.

Police have revealed that the bombs were ‘high explosives’ – not homemade. However they are declining to be specific about their composition as the information could be useful when they interrogate suspects.

Police will not confirm or deny if any parts of a timer have been found, but have said that “any device will now be in a million pieces”. Police believe the use of timers more likely than suicide bombings as the blasts were so closely timed, but are not ruling out anything.

Hepatitis scare at New Zealand McDonald’s restaurant

Saturday, December 30, 2006

McDonald’s is asking everyone who ate at a McDonald’s restaurant located in Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand, in December 15, 2006, to go to their doctor after a worker tested positive for Hepatitis A.

Doctor Greg Simmons, medical officer of health in Auckland, said that it is possible for the food handler worker to have passed on the disease during 7:00 p.m. (NZDT) and 2:00 a.m. as he would have been in the most infectious stage of Hepatitis A and was not wearing gloves. According to a spokeswoman from McDonald’s, Joanna Redfern-Hardisty, food handlers are not required to wear gloves but are required to have thoroughly washed their hands with antimicrobial soap. However Dr Simmons says that the infected worker usually wore gloves.

The shift the worker worked was the only one the worker handled food when he was infectious with Hepatitis A.

It is unknown how many people could have come into contact with food that the infected worker had prepared as Friday night is usually a busy night, according to Ms Redfern-Hardisty.

Dr Simmons says that if someone has been infected with Hepatitis A then they will currently be showing early symptoms. Those symptoms include being tired, no appetite, nausea and skin and eyes will show a yellowish colour.

Ms Redfern-Hardisty, spokeswoman for McDonald’s, confirmed that no more risk is being posed to customers. She said that it is currently unknown where the worker caught Hepatitis A but has stated that it was from an external source.

The worker has been suspended from work.

If you ate at the McDonalds located in Greenlane, Auckland, on late December 15, early December 16, then please either visit your doctor or ring the Auckland Regional Public Health Service on 096234600.

Australian Govt to lessen numbers of immigrants detained indefinitely

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

The Australian Government today announced terms of a new class of visa which is aimed at reducing the number of immigration detainees locked up indefinitely, after years of criticism by human rights watchdogs.

The new Return Pending Bridging Visa allows for release of detainees held for over three years and who have exhausted all rights for appeal, but who cannot be removed from Australia. In the community they will be provided income support, Medicare, maternity and child benefits, rent assistance and permission to work, and will be required to periodically report to authorities.

Senator Amanda Vanstone, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs said, “The new Bridging visa will only be granted to a relatively small number of detainees where … it is not reasonably practicable to achieve removal in the short term and where the detainee undertakes to cooperate fully with removal from Australia, once that becomes practicable.”

“The new bridging visa will not be available to detainees with current visa applications, or who are challenging decisions, either through review or courts,” the Minister said.

“The new bridging visa category does not apply to failed asylum seekers on Nauru. Management of that caseload remains completely separate from onshore cases.”

And the visa applies only at the Minister’s discretion.

A recent High Court decision has left it in the Government’s hands to resolve the issue of indefinite detention, maintaining that under the law there was nothing to prevent immigrants who could not be sent to another country and are not accepted by the Australian Government, from being imprisoned forever.

The change is thought to allow release of up to 100 detainees currently held, although it is not a blanket release for all detainees held over three years, for example the longest-serving detainee, Peter Qasim who has been held for seven years, will not be eligible.

Ms Vanstone claims Mr Qasim has not co-operated with the department’s attempts to establish his identity. India will only take him if it can be proven that he is Indian – and without any evidence available except his language, he has been unable to return. But according to Ms Vanstone, all it requires is “further co-operation from Mr Qasim” – therefore he remains in detention.

Qasim wrote in an open letter in September: “I have asked 80 countries to take me but all have refused. I have committed no crime but I have a life sentence. Please give me freedom. I would work hard with a grateful heart. But I cannot live imprisoned forever without hope.”

Wikinews interviews Christopher Beyette, prince of the Principality of Vikesland

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Over the past few months, Wikinews reporter Joseph Ford has held several interviews with Kevin Baugh, president of the Republic of Molossia, a micronation located near Dayton, Nevada. This week, Ford had the opportunity to interview another intermicronational leader, Christopher Beyette, prince of the Principality of Vikesland, another micronation located in Manitoba.

At only three years old, the Principality is a relative newcomer to the intermicronational community.

When asked if he considers Vikesland a serious micronation, Prince Christopher said that his country is “a new nation project. Our goal is to eventually become an internationally recognized state with hopefully some sort of small sovereign land base.”

He went on to tell much more about Vikesland, which can be read in the interview below.

Micro-loans to US poor from Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Grameen Bank of Bangladesh has made the first loans to U.S. citizens who do not have a bank account. Grameen Bank is experienced in micro-financing in its home country, lending money to poor women that want to start small businesses.

Since the start of the mortgage-crisis more people in the U.S. tend to turn to fringe financial institutions bypassing the mainstream bank institutes. “Now is a good time because of … the subprime crisis and that highlights the issue that the financial system is not perfect,” , says the bank’s founder and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. Grameen Bank started in 1976 by lending a total amount of $27.00 to 42 Bangladesh women. To date the bank has made over $6.5 billion in loans to 7 million people in Bangladesh.

Grameen Bank’s first loans of approximately $50,000.00 in total in the U.S. was to a group of women in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City. Garmeen Bank plans to offer $176 million in loans in New York City the next five years, and after that expanding into business as remittances and mortgages all over the U.S., as it has done in Bangladesh.

Prepping Your Heating And Cooling System

Prepping Your Heating and Cooling System

by

Jordan E.

Peoples everyday lives have to adapt to the changes of seasons in more ways than one. Aside from adaptations due to societal changese.g. preparations for tax seasonhomeowners are constantly faced with the issue of regulating the energy intake of their household. Given the unpredictability of weather recently, people always need to be ready to confront the most extreme circumstances. Whether the seasons bring abnormal temperatures or follow their regular weather patterns, anyone responsible for their own energy bill needs to make sure their system runs as efficiently as possible.

Those that are most successful in this endeavor are those that perform the proper preparatory steps to ready their heating and cooling systems for these seasonal changes. Becoming one of these prepared people can save you a lot of money in the long run. Here are some steps to follow that can make your energy bills much more reasonable: Upgrade Outdated Technology As with any industry that is heavily based off of technology, inefficient performance often stems from obsolete machinery. This concept applies fully for homeowners looking to decrease their energy bills. Furnaces and central air units that are outdated continue to lose their energy-efficiency and often need to overwork themselves to produce the desired results. Although this may likely be an expensive purchase, it is truly an investment in cost-savings and the preservation of your home in the long run. Utilize Thermostat Programming Provided you have a programmable thermostat, there are many settings that can have your system working as little as possible and still producing the exact results you desire. For instance, if the majority of your household is not home during the day, program your thermostat so your heating and cooling system kicks into gear just before everyone starts coming home. This will help you avoid spending unnecessary money and energy. Keep your system off on days when no one is home, especially during vacations. Catering your systems energy usage to the times when it is needed the most will result in favorable cost savings over time. Perform Routine Maintenance Although your system may appear to be operating correctly, you need to make sure there are no structural problems causing it to overwork itself. There are two very popular instances in which this is the case. Often times, there are leaks in heating and cooling ducts that waste energy constantly. Also, when the filters of your heating and cooling system are dirty, they will require your system to input excessive energy. Ultimately, eliminating these interruptions in air flow will keep your system running as efficiently as possible. Schedule a Professional Check-Up Most preparatory measures for your furnace or air-conditioning mechanism can be performed by anyone. However, there is definitely value in having the helping hand of an industry professional. It can be demoralizing to put forth time and effort to keep your system running efficiently, only to be confronted with more issues you are unable to solve. Thus, having the eyes, ears, and hands of an expert on your side can only be beneficial. They will make sure that all of the equipment involved is ready to perform properly for the long run.

Satanism: An interview with Church of Satan High Priest Peter Gilmore

Monday, November 5, 2007

In the 1980’s and the 1990’s there were multiple allegations of sexual abuse of children or non-consenting adults in the context of Satanic rituals that has come to be known as The Satanic Panic. In the United States, the Kern County child abuse cases, McMartin preschool trial and the West Memphis 3 cases garnered worldwide media coverage. One case took place in Jordan, Minnesota, when children made allegations of manufacturing child pornography, ritualistic animal sacrifice, coprophagia, urophagia and infanticide, at which point the Federal Bureau of Investigation was alerted. Twenty-four adults were arrested and charged with acts of sexual abuse, child pornography and other crimes related to satanic ritual abuse; only three went to trial with two acquittals and one conviction. Supreme Court Justice Scalia noted in a discussion of the case, “[t]here is no doubt that some sexual abuse took place in Jordan; but there is no reason to believe it was as widespread as charged,” and cited the repeated, coercive techniques used by the investigators as damaging to the investigation.

One of the most visible Satanic organizations—though one that was never a suspect or charged in any of the Satanic Panic cases—is the Church of Satan, founded by Anton LaVey. Members of the Church, such as Peter H. Gilmore, Peggy Nadramia, Boyd Rice, Adam Parfrey, Diabolos Rex, and musician King Diamond, were active in media appearances to refute allegations of criminal activity and the FBI would later issue an official report debunking the criminal conspiracy theories of this time.

Gilmore feels Satanists are often misunderstood or misrepresented. LaVey’s teachings are based on individualism, self-indulgence, and “eye for an eye” morality, with influence from Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand; while its rituals and magic draw heavily from occultists such as Aleister Crowley. They do not worship—nor believe in—the Devil or a Christian notion of Satan. The word “Satan” comes from the Hebrew word for “adversary” and originated from the Abrahamic faiths, being traditionally applied to an angel. Church of Satan adherents see themselves as truth-seekers, adversaries and skeptics of the religious world around them.

On a windy October day in Central Park, Wikinews reporter David Shankbone sat down with the High Priest of the Church, Peter H. Gilmore, who has led LaVey’s congregation of Satanists since his passing in 1997 (he became the High Priest in 2001). They discussed the beliefs of the Church, current events, LaVey’s children and how Satanism applies to life and the world.

Winning British EuroMillions lottery ticket worth £56 million claimed

Sunday, February 14, 2010

A winning British EuroMillions lottery ticket, worth approximately £56,008,113 (US$87,893,534, 64,565,882), has been claimed. The value of the prize breaks the record for the largest amount of money won in a lottery in the United Kingdom. The previous record, which was approximately £45 million (US$70.5 million, €52 million), was claimed in November 2009. That amount was given to both of the two lottery ticket winners of the draw, both of which happened to live in the United Kingdom.

The £56 million win, which occurred as a result of the EuroMillions lottery draw on Friday, was actually a share of the jackpot total of approximately £113 million (US$177 million, €130 million). The prize was shared between the UK winner and another winning ticket holder in Spain. At present, neither of the two winners have been publicly identified.

We have got the champagne ready and we’re just waiting for the lucky winner to come forward.

A spokesperson for the Camelot Group, who runs the EuroMillions lottery in the United Kingdom, said: “We have got the champagne ready and we’re just waiting for the lucky winner to come forward. It’s the biggest win that we have ever had in this country and whoever it is, wherever they are, their life is about to change dramatically. Subject to validation, the prize could be paid out when the banks open on Monday.”

The EuroMillions lottery draw takes place in nine European countries including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland. The biggest ever prize given out in the EuroMillions draw overall was approximately £113.2 million (US$177.7 million, €130.5 million). The prize was given to a solitary winner in Spain in May 2009.
