Keeping Your Workplace Free From Accidents &Amp; Injuries The Office Space

There was once a time when office safety consisted of basic procedures to use in the event of fire, earthquake or other natural disaster. Back then, the typical office environment was pretty subdued. In other words, a person sat at a desk and simply performed their assigned duties until the end of a work shift. As more workers tend to spend longer amounts of time in their office space, they get more comfortable with their surroundings. Some do harmless things such as use their office space to post pictures of loved ones or bring treats to be shared with co-workers. Yet, there are some habits than can be potentially dangerous to those who work in an office.

Common accidents such as tripping over carpet, getting a paper cut or running the copy machine without covering the screen are usually minor and can be remedied in a matter of minutes. Nowadays, accidents can be caused by simple things like furniture or dcor occupying an office space. Sometimes clothing such as excessive jewelry, clothes that are too tight or revealing can be considered a culprit. Though multitasking can be a very productive method to complete many duties simultaneously, it is not always recommended. If a person runs inside an office, they chance not only hurting themselves but anyone who is not aware of a person whos obviously in a rush. Also, people should immediately clean up when a liquid has spilled on any surface and not assume that it will dry on its own or that someone else should be responsible for it.

These days, people feel so committed to their work that leaving an untidy desk has become the norm. Office workers mostly feel that if they leave things just as they were the day before, it will help them to continue without having to remember where they left off. Others dont care or feel that as long as work gets done, they should be as comfortable as they like. While this habit may help or hinder performance, it is not recommended for the person who eats at their desk. Sometimes a person cannot take time away for lunch but the food scent tends to attract insects such as ants, cockroaches and flies which, over time, can create a serious health hazard. This can be remedied by not only wiping down all surfaces with a moist towel but also emptying the trash so as not to leave a lingering scent.

Nowadays, most office workers have received at least one on-the-job orientation in regard to body mechanics during work. Not just sitting but overall body alignment while lifting objects or handling equipment can make a difference in overall safety. Slouching or leaning sideways in a chair can be damaging to the back and tends to present an unprofessional image. Feet should always remain on the floor never on top of a desk or furniture that is not designed as a foot rest. Hand positioning while using a computer is very important in the long run. Ailments such as carpal tunnel syndrome not only cost time away from work but cause permanent damage to hand nerves that can only be corrected with surgery.

Being aware of and noting anything unusual or possibly unsafe is one way to prevent accidents and injuries from happening. Report any hazards that cannot be resolved immediately to a direct supervisor as they may know what measures to take.
