Bomb scare closes Times Square, New York

Sunday, May 2, 2010

A car containing a bomb was discovered in Times Square, New York City, causing the evacuation of streets surrounding the area.

Reports say the vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, parked outside a theatre on 45th Street and Seventh Avenue, had smoke coming out of the back at around 6:30 p.m EDT (10:30 p.m. UTC). Unconfirmed reports say an unknown man ran away from the car. A roughly square area of the city, its boundaries formed by 43rd and 48th Street and 7th and 8th Avenue, was evacuated.

The New York Police Department bomb squad was called in and were able to retrieve the package using a robot. Officials removed gunpowder, consumer-grade fireworks, two five-gallon cans of gasoline, three propane tanks, electrical wiring, and two clocks with batteries that apparently were fashioned as one or two detonators. The bomb has been described as “amateurish”. No casualties or injuries were reported.

As of yet police have not named a suspect and are reviewing security footage. The car used by the suspect was stolen and had a non-matching license plate; the legitimate owner of the plates does not appear to have been involved in the incident.

President Barack Obama has congratulated the speediness with which the New York Police Department responded.

New York has been in a state of constant alert since the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. In September 2009, a plot to attack the New York Subway with suicide bombers was uncovered by police. In December 2009, Times Square was evacuated due to a illegally parked van, although it contained no explosives. On March 6, 2008, a small bomb was set off in front of the United States armed forces recruiting station in Times Square.

20 dead in Hyderabad, India flyover collapse

Sunday, September 9, 2007

At least 20 people have died and 20 more are injured after a partially constructed flyover (overpass) in Hyderabad, India collapsed onto traffic.

The disaster occurred at the Panjagutta junction, near Nagarjuna Circle. Two large concrete sections dropped onto oncoming cars and motorised rickshaws, damaging several severely.

A large emergency effort was immediately activated, but experienced severe difficulties in reaching the site due to congested traffic resulting from the collapse. Ambulances from the 108 EMRI Service and Appollo Hospitals attended the scene, and rushed the injured to a variety of nearby hospitals. All the region’s major hospitals, particularly the nearby Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences, have placed their medical staff on emergency alert. Rescuers are now using cranes and cutting equipment in an effort to reach anyone who may still be trapped. It is expected that the death toll could rise further as many vehicles remain trapped under tons of debris.

Various politicians also attended the scene, including the local district collector, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Senior Congress Leader and MLA from Khairathabad P Janardhan Reddy and several other ministers.

Police have asked both the public and the press to keep away from the area, in order to prevent further collapse of the unstable structure. Preliminary investigations suggest the flyover had been been poorly constructed. The construction project had been carried out by leading contractor Gammon India Limited. It had been delayed, the original foundations having been built in 2005. After a successful request by the company to have the deadline for the project extended, work was slated to cease in November of this year, with the flyover entering operation by December. It is believed heavy rains in the area a few hours prior to the collapse may have contributed to the disaster.

Common Water Heater Issues And What You Should Do?

To look at the era of the hot water system, start looking for a producer’s badge plate onto the unit and see that the production date on it (it might have a plastic cap on it).

You also don’t wish to run the heating element once the tank is nearly empty. If you are experiencing issues with your gas hot water system, then you will want to switch off the gasoline.

Start looking for one more pipe (gasoline ) running to the machine and then turn it off in that faucet or lever valve. You will also have to isolate the water flow to the heater as explained previously.

What to do when a water heater issue occurs?

Before you call a Sydney plumber, the very first thing you should do is assess in which the flow is coming out. Is it at the top or bottom of the hot water heater? Or can it be leaking from the strain relief (PRV) or even the pressure/temperature relief valve (PTRV)?

 • When it’s that the PRV or even PTRV, things may not be quite as severe. It is normal for those valves to flow a little water sometimes, but not all of the time.
 • Find the valve onto the face of the tank close to the bottom or top, then lift the silver lever four or three occasions to start, close and clear any blockages. If the water flow ceases, your issue is solved.
 • If it keeps working, you likely require a replacement valve. This is a fairly inexpensive repair that can prolong the life span of your whole system and prevent water wastage so that it’s worth it.
 • At a popular water crisis, one of our specialist plumbers can be on your premises in just two hours of your call. When it is not a crisis, we still promise same-day support so that you may get hot water once you actually need it.
 • A flow may be an indication your hot water support is corroding and it is going to only get worse over time. The tricky water quality in Sydney frequently contributes to air corrosion and while some warm water solutions continue well beyond their guarantee of five to seven decades, the average lifespan is just around 10 or 12 decades.

Measures you need to consider when your hot water system has a flow:

 1. Start looking for a tiny black faucet or lever valve on a tube leading into the base of the unit. Turn off this completely. If you can not locate the inlet faucet, also it’s seized up, switch off the water in the mains water dispenser. However, before you do, it is a fantastic idea to fill out the pot or a jug with water for drinking and also have a few pieces of water handy so that you can flush your toilet.
 2. If the flow is coming from the surface or underside of your electrical or solar hot water installation system, then you have to switch off the power to it in your electricity board. This is a significant step because the immediate connection between water and electricity is potentially quite dangerous.
 3. As soon as we recommend replacing your faulty hot water method we recommend only the very reliable hot water system providers so that you can reliably expect your hot water source for several years to come.
 4. In any event, we will have a plumber out of our team to repair your hot water method, quickly. We recommend homeowners stop working on their very own hot water system, and it is ideal to act quickly; a warm water flow can become considerably worse in only 24 hours should you leave it.
 5. Switch your hot water method. If you have a gas hot water method, find the gas isolation valve and then turn off that. If you cannot find it, then switch off the gas by shutting off the gas meter. In case you’ve got an electrical, solar or heat pump, then switch off the circuit breaker on your mainboard in order to cut off power in your own hot water method.
 6. Instantly call your specialist plumber to look at your hot water method. Bear in mind, repairing the problem as soon as possible for such a simple flow in your hot water may prevent serious problems from happening and can prolong the lifespan of your own unit.
 7. As soon as you’ve switched off your hot water, then the very best alternative may be to call a specialist. Call our staff at 1300 13 80 80 or continue reading to learn more!

Where to find the best hot water repairs in Sydney?

Now you’ve got a hot water system that’s either broken or ignored, and you want to be aware of what the next step would be. Many people today attempt to DIY their warm water system difficulties, and at times it works for them.

Our fully qualified Plumbers in Sydney and gas fitters can manage any repairs or install a new hot water system so that you have access to dependable hot water.

We are going to look into the water heater issue and advise you on the ideal solution. We can fix any hot water system — regardless of the make or model — or we can provide and install a replacement. We will also take the older unit off, which means you don’t need to worry about disposing of it safely.

Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

Saturday, April 17, 2010

In a new setback to the Thai government’s efforts to ease mounting political tensions, protest leaders escaped from their hotel Friday after security forces arrived to arrest them.

One, Arisman Pongruangrong, climbed down three floors using a rope, and was rushed away by supporters thronging the building. The police say Arisman led recent rallies at the national parliament, the election commission, and satellite transmission bases.

Officials earlier Friday said the government is preparing to arrest people linked to violent clashes with security forces last Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Thai security chief, announced the raid on the hotel as it was unfolding, saying that a Special Forces unit had closed in around a downtown Bangkok hotel.

“As I am speaking, the government’s special team is surrounding the SC Park Hotel, where we have learned that there are terrorists and some of their leaders hiding,” Suthep said.

A spokesman for the governing Democrat Party, Baranuj Smuthararaks, says arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of being involved in the violence. Some of the suspects have been identified from photos taken during the clashes.

“Right now the government’s focusing on issuing warrants for acts of terrorism by the people who fortunately have been captured in action [in photos] by both the local and international media,” he said.

According to the New York Times, as many as five protest leaders had been staying at the same hotel as Pongruangrong. Those leaders later appeared together at a protest rally in Bangkok.

“I would like to thank all of the people who saved me,” Arisman said. “You have saved democracy.”The government says armed men infiltrated protester ranks Saturday and fired on troops trying to disperse a rally. Five soldiers and 19 protesters died during the clashes.

Thailand is facing its most severe political crisis in almost 20 years. The anti-government movement, led by the United Democratic Front against Dictatorship or UDD, demands that the government step down and call fresh elections.

UDD supporters, known as red shirts, have held protests in Bangkok for more than a month.

The UDD largely supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and remains overseas to avoid a jail sentence for corruption. Mr. Thaksin has strong support among the rural and urban poor, as well among some sections of the army and police.

Some parties in the governing coalition want to set a clear time frame for elections to ease tensions. But the government says it will only call elections once the political situation has cooled.

Mobilize Your Heavy Items With Portable Hand Carts

Submitted by: Penny Lane

Do you often have trouble transporting heavy objects by yourself? Do you ever find yourself having difficulty maneuvering through a busy and crowded airport with your luggage in tow? Everyone could use a little extra help from time to time and a hand cart can be just the object to make your life a little bit easier. Hand carts are available in a range of sizes, styles, and weights and are designed to help people transport the heavy or bulky items that they need to move around-including suitcases!

The great thing about portable models is that they can be used for a variety of reasons. Because they are so easily transportable, you can even take them in the airport with you and store them in the overhead compartment, making them perfect for quickly moving your heavy carry-on bag through busy terminals. While most people might envision using a hand cart for furniture or large items, they actually have a lot of uses.

Folding ones are becoming increasingly popular for those who often need help mobilizing objects but do not have the storage space for a large hand cart. These folding types or telescoping hand carts are lightweight and portable and can be stored under a seat, in a closet, in an overhead compartment, or in the trunk of your car without any difficulty.

A folding type can fold flat to give you more space for storage but can still push or pull loads up to large weights, making it convenient all the way around. They are not flimsy just because they can be easily stored. Rather, you get the benefit of both worlds: a convenient design and a lightweight model.

You can also find them with locking wheels and handles, elastic straps, and even guards in front of the wheels in order to protect soft cases. Of course, you might prefer one that boasts a click-n-go attachment and you can find these as well when you purchase a unit that comes with optional upgrades.

Certain models have a single motion squeeze which offers extra convenience, especially if you are in a hurry. You would not have to worry about trying to get your hand cart closed by using a lot of pressure and effort. Instead, you can simply press a release and watch it fold up on its own!

When picking out one, you just need to consider your needs and take a look at the amount of weight that the hand cart in question is able to transport. Not everyone needs one that is able to transport hundreds of pounds, although there are models out there that can mobilize that much weight if necessary.

Sometimes, everyone needs a little extra help now and then and the right one can help you do the heavy work with little to no effort on your part. With so many varieties and types of hand carts available, you should not have any difficulty finding one that works for you and suits your needs.

Athletes prepare for 2012 Summer Paralympics at the Paralympic Fitness Centre

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Penske Auto selected to buy General Motors’ Saturn unit

Friday, June 5, 2009

General Motors Corporation (GM), an American automaker which has filed for bankruptcy protection, announced on Friday that the Penske Automotive Group (PAG) was selected to purchase Saturn Corporation. The transaction should be completed in October.

The purchase includes rights to the Saturn brand, its five current models and its dealership network. Two models would be discontinued, the Sky and Astra. GM would continue building the Aura sedan, the SUV’s, Vue and Outlook for at least two more years.

Saturn has 350 dealers across the United States. The dealers employ more than 13,000 jobs and sell only the Saturn autos. Canadian Saturn dealers are not included in the deal.

According to Penske future Saturn vehicles will be fuel economy focused. An expert indicated that this would move Saturn back to its roots of a entry level car company. PAG is in talks with several international automakers to replace GM after 2011. Automotive News reports that Renault Samsung Motors of Korea is the most likely candidate.

Penske wants Jill Lajdziak, Saturn’s general manager, and Tom LaSorda, former Chrysler President to head up the company when it is independent of GM.

Serra Automotive in Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County, Michigan, is in talks to take a partial ownership in a new Saturn lead by Penske.

The People Of Namibia

Namibia is the 2nd lowest populated country with a population of only 1.8 million. Despite this it has many various peoples, with their own cultures, languages and traditions. This makes Namibia a fascinating country to visit on a cultural tour.

Ovambo

Of the 1,8 million Namibians, around 900,000 are Ovambo. Their homeland lies north of the Etosha Pan, with the town of Oshakati as its centre. The Ovambo are a branch of the Bantu people who came here in the 16th century from East Africa. Traditionally, they are farmers and on the relatively fertile soils of the north, grow mainly maize, sorghum, millet, pumpkins, beans and melons. They also have some cattle and goats.

Kavango

About 150,000 Kavangos settle east of the former Ovamboland at the southern banks of the Okavango river. A large part of them came from Angola. The Kavango also live on agriculture and a bit of cattle breeding and fishing. They are excellent wood craftsmen and have a language of their own. Rundu is their centre.

Caprivians

In the very north-east of Namibia live about 50,000 Caprivians. Their centre is Katima Mulilo. Their economy is based on cattle, agriculture and fishing and have their own language.

Herero

The third-largest group with about 150,000 members, are the Herero people who mainly inhabit central Namibia. The Herero women’s wide skirts and colourful headgear; the shape of which reminds one of a cow’s horns, can be traced back to the influence of the missionaries’ wives who, in the beginning, were upset about the women’s sparing traditional dress. The proud, tall and strongly built Herero people are fanatic cattle breeders.Their centre is Okahandja where every year, they hold a festival to honour their ancestors.

Himba

Closely related to the Herero are the approximately 5.000 Himba who live in the remote Kaokoland (50.000 square kilometres in size), in the north-west with the town of Opuwo as the centre. The Himba still uphold their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle. They speak the same language as the Herero and live exclusively on their herds of cattle.

Nama

The entire south of Namibia has been traditionally inhabited by the Nama people. They are related to the Khoikhoi and came here from Cape. The approximately 80,000 Nama mainly farm with sheep and goats. They speak a Khoisan dialect with various click sounds: very difficult to learn.

Damara

The 90,000 Damara speak the same language as the Nama. Their main settlement area stretches from the Erongo to the Etosha Pan with the town of Khorixas as its centre. The majority of them, however, live scattered across the whole of the country. The Damara breed cattle and had mastered the art of forging iron and copper from way back.

Bushmen

The indigenous inhabitants of Namibia are the Bushmen. Indications are that they have lived here for as long as 20,000 years already. The number of the Bushmen still living in Namibia is estimated at 40,000. They live mainly to the west of Tsumkwe, but the Bushmen are by nature and tradition a nomadic people.

Basters

The 25,000 Rehoboth Basters live exclusively in and around the town of Rehoboth south of Windhoek. They are the decendants of Khoikhoi women and Afrikaans immigrants from the Cape Colony who left the Cape in 1870 and founded Rehoboth. The Basters speak Afrikaans and still follow the Afrikaner traditions and culture. They predominantly breed cattle and are good artisans.

Whites

About 100,000 whites (officially called Caucasians) live in Namibia. 20% of them are of German, 20% are English and 60% are of Afrikaans extraction. After the Ist World War they immigrated from South Africa to Namibia..
