Apple to give free cases, refunds to iPhone 4 owners

Saturday, July 17, 2010

Apple Inc. announced Friday that it will give owners of its new iPhone 4 a free case in response to mounting concerns over the device’s antenna placement. The iPhone 4 antenna is actually a metal strip that wraps around the side of the device, which has caused dropped calls when held in a certain way.

The announcement came in a rare press conference held by Apple on Friday morning. During the event, company CEO Steve Jobs attempted to address reports by both consumers and the media of signal reception issues relating to the positioning of the phone’s antenna. Rather than recall the devices or offer a hardware fix, Jobs said yesterday that Apple will offer a free case to anyone who has purchased an iPhone 4.

The rubber cases, or “bumpers”, wrap around the side of an iPhone and have been found to alleviate the reception issues. Apple’s bumpers were priced at US$29 before the press conference, but will be free to anyone with an iPhone 4 until September 30. Jobs also said that those who had already purchased a bumper will receive a full refund for the accessory. For consumers still dissatisfied with iPhone 4, Jobs said that the phones can be returned for a refund as well.

Jobs acknowledged that “a very small percentage of users” were experiencing antenna issues, but dismissed the existence of an “Antennagate,” saying that similar problems plague all cellular phones and that the iPhone issue “has been blown so out of proportion that it is incredible.” He showed videos demonstrating a drop in signal strength when held in a certain way for other smartphones to help make his point.

According to company statistics, about one out of every 200 iPhone 4 customers have called AppleCare to complain about the antenna. The iPhone 4 return rate is about one-third of the iPhone 3GS return rate. However, Jobs admitted that the percentage of calls dropped on the iPhone 4 was slightly greater than the percentage of calls dropped on the 3GS. Jobs attributed the small increase to fewer iPhone 4 users putting cases on their devices.

In response to critics saying that Apple had not addressed the reception problem quickly enough, Jobs said that iPhone 4 had only been out for 22 days and that the company could not have resolved the issue any faster. The press event came just days after Consumer Reports declined to give Apple’s newest phone a “recommended” rating due to the antenna’s placement. The group said that Apple’s move to give away free cases is a good first step, but not permanent enough to earn a higher rating.

Earlier, on June 24, Apple told customers to either hold the phone without covering the antenna, or to use a case. The so-called “death grip”, however, has not been as big an issue for other phones as it has for iPhone 4, said Mike Gikas of Consumer Reports. On July 2, Apple associated the issue with a long-undiscovered software bug relating to the formula for calculating signal strength. An iOS update released Thursday came with an updated, more accurate method of calculating the number of cellular signal bars to display, but did not actually prevent the signal loss that comes with covering the antenna.

Debt Crisis? What Does God Say?

By Zandile Shaba

Personal Debt Crisis!

The number one issue that people with problems approach me for is related to debt. Being an ex-banker I have personally witnessed how people can be ruined by too much debt. When debt is uncontrolled it can lead to financial destruction, business failure, failed marriages and family distress.

What does the bible say about debt? Well, here are some scriptures that will give you an idea;

Deuteronomy 15:6

For the Lord your God will bless you as He has promised you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you

Proverbs 22:7

The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower becomes the lenders slave.

Romans 13:8

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

From the above scriptures it is clear that although the bible does not specifically prohibit debt, it certainly does not have anything good to say about it. Gods best is for us to live debt free. Debt is not Gods idea, but mans idea. He has provided everything for us that pertains to life and Godliness. The reality is that nowadays it is becoming more and more difficult to live without debt. In some countries, it is almost impossible to operate without a credit card. In fact you actually need a credit card in order for you build a credible credit record. In Zambia what we have are loan sharks that are charging rates such as 30% per month! That is a per annum interest rate of over 360%! If you borrow from these guys you certainly qualify for the months award for What were you thinking?.

So why do we get into debt?

1. The number one reason is premature lifestyle enhancement. We would rather buy today rather than save until we have enough money to buy what we want. Most of the debt that I acquired in the past was for things that I could have avoided. I really did not need that new car at the time that I acquired it. But I wanted it now. It took me a while to work my way out of that debt!

2. Competing with others we want to be better than our neighbors, friends colleagues etc. Remember that the people you are trying to impress will not be there to bail you out when you declare bankruptcy.

3. Low self esteem – we try to build ourselves by acquiring stuff

4. Interest rates are low therefore it makes sense to borrow -Many have borrowed on the basis of low interest rates and got their fingers severely burnt when interest rates went up or the currency strengthened. The sub-prime mortgage crisis is a case in point. Circumstances can change, sometimes overnight. What makes sense today may not make sense tomorrow and if you are in debt it is difficult to exit a position you would have tied yourself into.

In the book Business by the Book by Larry Burket (1998), he gives the following guidelines for borrowing;

1. Dont borrow needlessly ask yourself whether the borrowing is really necessary. The first choice should always be to wait and save.

2. Avoid guaranteeing anyones debt . Proverbs 6 vs 1-3 says

My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth. So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbors hands: Goto the point of exhaustionand give your neighbor no rest!

3. When you borrow, you must repay. Psalm 37 vs 21 says The wicked borrows and does not pay back, but the righteous is gracious and gives.

As Christians we need to take whatever steps we can to re-pay our debts. I personally have stopped lending to Christians because in almost ALL cases, I was never re-paid. I soon learned that if I have the money I would rather give it away. Otherwise, I simply say no. Proverbs 22 vs 7 says that the borrower becomes a slave to the lender, so I would rather not be in the slave trade business.

Another tip I can add is talk to someone first before signing off on that debt deal. Proverbs 11 vs 14 says Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Sometime wise counsel can help you snap out of that pressure mode where you feel you must have it now.

Australian Greens senator Bob Brown marks 10 years in Parliament

Thursday, March 2, 2006

As the Australian Prime Minister John Howard celebrated his ten-year reign this week, Greens Leader Bob Brown marked the 10th anniversary of his election into the Federal parliament.

Senator Brown has outlasted 10 other party leaders: Meg Lees, Cheryl Kernot, Natasha Stott-Despoja, Brian Greig, Andrew Bartlett, all former Democrat leaders. Pauline Hanson, Len Harris of the One Nation party, plus the Australian Labor Party’s Kim Beazley, Simon Crean and Mark Latham have all been and gone during that time.

Only Prime Minister John Howard and Senator Bob Brown are left standing as leaders in the Australian Federal Parliament. Bob Brown was elected to the Senate in 1996, and re-elected in 2001. He has introduced bills for constitutional reform, forest protection, to block radioactive waste dumping, to ban mandatory sentencing, and greenhouse abatement.

Senator Brown says his party has hardly been in the balance of power at any stage, yet the Australian Greens have risen in popularity. “We’ve become the third major political party in the country and we’re on our way to becoming a real power broker in this country and ultimately, the aim has to be becoming part of the Government of the country,” he told ABC Radio.

While there’s perpetual media speculation over John Howard’s possible retirement, Senator Brown says he’s full of beans and ready for the next 10 years. “And there’s no speculation about me standing at next year’s election. I can’t wait,” Senator Brown said. “Our election aim will be to rescue the Senate from the Howard government, and doubling our team is not beyond reality.”

The Tasmanian Greens senator predicts his party could govern the country one day. “We’re on our way to becoming a real powerbroker in this country and ultimately the aim has to be becoming part of the government of the country,” he said.

The Greens started with Brown’s entry into the Senate after the 1996 election, doubled to two senators in 2001, and has four had senators represented since 2004.

The four Greens senators and their staff say they will celebrate with a chocolate cake – and 10 green candles. The government held a gala fundraising dinner in the Great Hall of Parliament on Wednesday night to celebrate Mr Howard’s milestone.

Senator Brown said the success of Prime Minister John Howard is in his ability to play on fears. “(Howard)… is able to “dig a little bit below surface to play on fears that people have. He has presided over a country where the rich have got richer much faster than the poor have seen their conditions improve,” he said. “And it is a country that says if you are down on your luck, bad luck. The good Samaritan aspect which is very strong in this country, doesn’t reside with this government.”

Of the Federal Labor Party the Greens leader said they should move back to humanitarian politics He said Labor was trying to swing to the right but had lost its way. “I think the Opposition has lost its way and I think it is going to get worse,” Senator Brown said. “The indications are that the Opposition thinks if it moves to the right it will do better,” said Senator Brown.

Bob Brown is among 20 environmentalists, organisations and concerned citizens who were issued a 216 page writ by the Tasmanian-based timber company Gunns Limited in December 2004. The woodchipping giant is sueing for a combined AU$6.3 million for actions it claims has damaged their business and reputation. The defendants say the case is ‘industrial’ style litigation, alleging conspiracy, interference with trade and business and defamation. Nine different campaigns are cited.

Australian state of Queensland will go to the polls on March 21

Thursday, February 26, 2009

The Premier of the Australian state of Queensland has announced that the state will have its election on Saturday, March 21. In an address on YouTube, Anna Bligh of the Australian Labor Party said that she called the election due to the state of the economy and to stabilise the government.

“It’s time for Queensland to settle this election. It’s time to settle the speculation. So that government, business and the community can get on with the task at hand and not be distracted and destabilised by looming elections,” Ms Bligh said in the statement.

Ms Bligh has recently denied that she would call an early election.

“I have always said that I want my government to run the full term and I have not changed my view on this lightly,” she said.

“After 11 years in office, Ms Bligh only cares about one job: her own,” said Lawrence Springborg head of the Liberal National Party (LNP) and the Leader of the Opposition. “Queensland deserves better. Over the next 27 days, the LNP will build on our vision for the Queensland we all deserve.”

The Opposition need to pick up at least twenty seats from the government to overcome the significant Labor majority and a number of independents.

“It is a sad legacy of economic management and mismanagement of the Labor Government that after 11 years of the rivers of gold, our state is broke,” Mr Springborg said. “It’s a little bit like lighting a fire and then running around and wanting credit for putting it out.”

A March 21 election gives candidates twenty six day to campaign. This is just within the legal requirements. The Queensland Electoral Act (1992) requires the election campaign to last between 26 and 56 days.

The Queensland Greens nominated an environmental lawyer to run against treasurer Andrew Fraser.

“We can tackle climate change and create long-term jobs, but Labor can’t see that because they are blinded by the interests of their big donors – the urban development and coal industries,” says Larrisa Waters, the Greens candidate for Mt-Cootha.

“The Greens want to give the community and the environment a voice back in State Parliament.”

“The current stance taken by both major parties, in relation to Daylight Saving in Queensland, is outdated, out of touch and inflexible. South East Queenslanders are frustrated that neither major party is currently prepared to explore options on the issue of Daylight Saving”, DS4SEQ party leader Jason Furze told Wikinews on January 30. DS4SEQ is a single-issue party, focused on the debate on daylight saving time.

Indigenous activist Sam Watson will be contesting the South Brisbane electorate which is currently held by the premier. He will represent the Socialist Alliance. Watson campaigned heavly for indigenous rights since the 1970s and was a community spokesperson following the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee in 2004.

Better Together + Leverage = Joint Ventures

Better Together + Leverage = Joint Ventures

by

Ronda Del Boccio

Here’s a little small business advice that will pad your pocketbook with minimal expense and minimal effort. It may sound too good to be true, but all it takes is understanding “better together.” Starting with what else do your customers need, I will show you how to organize profitable joint ventures.

Have you ever bought those popular sandwich cookies that have their own song? Part of the song is about dunking those oh-so-chocolaty sandwich cookies in milk. Better together. Yogurt with fruit, hotdogs with mustard, and bagels with cream cheese – lots of things are better together. Now you are about to discover how to think that way for your business.

This is one of the easiest ways to add to your profits. I can’t think of any better small business advice I can give you than to organize these mutually beneficial offers.

No matter what kind of business you run, what products you sell or services you offer, you can serve both your customers and your bank account better by organizing joint ventures, or JVs. All you need is a sincere desire to serve your customers even better than you already do plus an eye for increasing leverage.

An accountant and a tax preparer are a natural fit. Someone who hires an accountant also needs to do taxes, and she is more likely to hire someone. So offering a special offer, such as a discount coupon or service upgrade deal is valuable. Likewise, the tax preparer sees a lot of people who certainly SHOULD have someone do their accounting. Thus, he arranges to offer a discount or special offer from the accountant for all his clients.

That’s a win-win-win proposition. It’s like creating money out of thin air, because there is minimal effort, negligible cost, and long-term benefit for the business owners PLUS value added for the customer. Here’s how it works.

Both businesses increase their bottom line and gain new customers because of the arrangement. And I cannot forget to mention that all of this happens with NO advertising costs. They each may print off coupons or letters, but the cost of copies is far less than the cost of TV, radio or newspaper advertising.

And the customers win because when they purchase either service, they receive a little extra gift that gives them something they need. Not every customer will do business with both the accountant and the tax preparer, but some will.

Working deals like this can easily add whole new streams of income without adding extra duties, expenses or employees..

*** How to look for JV opportunities ***

Take some time to reflect upon and write down your answers to the following questions, because it will give you insights that can turn into profit.

* What else do my customers want or need?

Do my customers use additional services alongside mine?

* Do they typically purchase from nearby merchants or stores?

* What else can I add to go along with what I already offer that won’t take up my own time and energy?

You might notice customers coming into your business carrying shopping bags from a particular shop. Seeing this often means there is a pattern. You could go talk to the owner of that business and create a mutually beneficial deal.

If you do business online, what other products are a natural fit with what you offer? Who offers those other products or services? Since I have a system for how to write a book that prospers your business, I organize JVs with publishers and book launch companies.

Once you know what else your customers would like, you seek out a reliable source with whom to organize a mutually beneficial deal. So start using the “better together” formula to create your own profitable joint ventures.

Icelandic volcanic eruption prompts evacuation, flight diversions

Sunday, March 21, 2010

A volcanic eruption started yesterday in south Iceland at or near the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The first signs of the eruption were seen between 23:00 and midnight GMT. It is still not clear where the exact location of the eruption is but it appears to be on Fimmvörðuháls.

People living in the area are being evacuated. Police have closed the roads into the area and a state of emergency has been declared. The eruption is expected to result in flooding if it is under the glacier, but fortunately it appears to between Eyjafjallajökull and another glacier, Mýrdalsjökull, reducing the danger of flooding. It is reported that the eruption can be seen as far away as from Vestmannaeyjar. So far the lava flow is viscous and thick.

There is also a danger that this eruption could trigger another eruption on nearby Mt. Katla, which is an off-rift volcano beneath Mýrdalsjökull. In the past, eruptions at Eyjafjallajökull have triggered eruptions at Mt. Katla. If Katla does erupt, the effect would be far more significant than that of the current eruption, as lava could melt the ice at the top of the mountain, causing the potential for massive flooding.

The air carrier Icelandair has diverted flights which were destined for Iceland as a precaution, due to the risks to aircraft of flying into volcanic ash. A notice to airlines prohibits flights within 120 nautical miles of the volcano.

Iceland is a volcanic island situated atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the juncture of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
