Pagan pentacle accepted by U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs

Thursday, April 26, 2007

The Wiccan pentacle was added to the list of 38 emblems allowed on United States government-issued headstones for soldiers, according to a settlement announced Monday April 23.

The settlement was in response to a lawsuit brought on behalf of nine families by the advocacy groups ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AUSCS). One of these was the family of Sgt. Patrick Stewart, 34, who was killed in Afghanistan, who was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His wife Roberta Stewart said in the year prior to the settlement “This is discrimination against our religion”.

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn of the AUSCS said: “This settlement has forced the Bush Administration into acknowledging that there are no second class religions in America, including among our nation’s veterans.”

Wicca is a nature-based religion. Many Wiccans, though not all, include themselves in Paganism or Neopaganism. There are an estimated one million Neopagans in the world today.

UN Secretary-General expresses concern about crises in Chad, Kenya, Sudan

Thursday, February 7, 2008

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern about crises in Chad, Kenya, and the Sudan. The U.N. chief is recently back from Africa where he attended the African Union summit in Ethiopia and met with leaders in Kenya.

On rebel efforts to overthrow the government in Chad in recent days, the secretary-general welcomed an African Union initiative to have the leaders of Libya and the Democratic Republic of Congo mediate the crisis. He says the United Nations will do its utmost to help resolve the crisis, urging the Security Council to act swiftly to help bring an end to the violence.

“It has devastating consequences not only for the people of Chad and Darfurian refugees seeking shelter there, but also for Darfur itself,” said Ban.

Mr. Ban told reporters the situation in the neighboring Darfur region of Sudan is no less troubling. He says the deployment of the AU-U.N. peacekeeping force, known as UNAMID, must be sped up and urged member states to properly equip the troops.

“UNAMID still lacks required aviation and ground transportation – chiefly helicopters. Additional troops will not make up for this shortfall,” said Ban. “Those countries that called for intervention in Darfur are under special obligation to deliver on their promises.”

While at the AU summit, Mr. Ban says he discussed some of the outstanding issues affecting the deployment with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and he expects the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to be signed this week. But Mr. Ban remained vague on whether some of the agreement’s sticking points – such as night flights, land agreements, and advance notice of U.N. movements – had been settled.

On Kenya, Mr. Ban says he has been deeply engaged in the post-election crisis and told political leaders during his visit there that they bear particular responsibility for the future of Kenya.

“I stressed to all the Kenyan leaders the need to stop the unacceptable violence and killings, and to resolve their differences through dialogue and democratic process. I also appealed to all the political leaders to think beyond their individual interests or party lines and to look to the future of Kenya as one country,” he said.

Mr. Ban also met in Nairobi with his U.N. predecessor, Kofi Annan, who is leading the panel of eminent Africans trying to mediate the crisis, and said they discussed his roadmap for the talks.

Security of U.N. personnel in Africa and elsewhere has been high on the secretary-general’s agenda, especially in the wake of the December bombing in Algeria that killed 17 staff members. Mr. Ban announced that he is naming diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi to chair an independent panel on safety and security of U.N. personnel and premises. Brahimi is an Algerian, but Mr. Ban says he has no concerns about his fairness or objectivity in heading up the panel.

Call The Experts To Deal With The Problem Of Termites

Submitted by: Stewart Wrighter

Every year, there are many homes that are facing a termite problem. Termites are a serious problem because they can create havoc within the structure of your house. The problem with these pests is that often it is detected after considerable damage has already been done. This problem can be contained, but it is better if it is nipped in the bud before it has time to escalate to drastic proportions. So even at the slightest hint of a problem with these pests, contact the termite control experts to make sure that your house is free from the menace.

These pests are tiny, soft, light in color and look like rice. They have a very well- organized colony system and can breed at a fast rate. They feed on cellulose and the more cellulose they find, larger will their family become. These bugs can only be eliminated by experts who have extensive knowledge and experience about their habits and lives. You may think a quick spray will resolve the problem, but this is not true. While insecticidal sprays will send them into hiding, they will still be eating up your furniture from the inside. After a certain amount of time, they will re-surface and cause more havoc because of their increased number. So you need the experts on board as soon as you find that termites are infesting your house.

Experienced exterminators will drive these bugs out from their hiding places and fix your problem once and for all. Most of the pest control experts require a vacant house for proper removal of these insects as they use heavy-duty equipment like pumps, masonry drills, soil treatment rods, chemical tanks, etc. to get rid of these bugs.

The cost of your termite control plan depends on many factors. The most obvious ones are the methods used and the size of the property. Recent chemical barrier treatments like Termidor are very effective against an infestation from recurring and cost more than the traditional baiting systems. Liquid chemicals like Termiticides are often poured into the ground near the foundation of your house when dealing with serious termite issue. The chemical goes below the concrete slabs right into the foundation of your house. Such extreme measures may be necessary when the population of bugs in your house has been blown out of proportion. There are also several different types of control options available so you have to select a method that comes within your budget.

Termite control is a specialized job so you need to make sure that the people you contact is in the know on how to handle the job. After all, treatments are not cheap and also can cause significant discomfort to the household members during the duration of this operation. You should choose a company of good repute and make sure that they are licensed by the Department of Agriculture or any other agency regulating pest control companies operating in your area. If any of your friends, family or neighbors has used an exterminating company before, ask them for reference and feedback on their experience.

Culture of creativity features at Furnal Equinox 2018

Sunday, March 25, 2018

Visual art, fabric art, photography, performance, dance, virtual reality, and music were all the subject of sessions at Furnal Equinox 2018, a conference held from March 16 to 18 at Toronto’s Westin Harbour Castle. Canada’s largest furry convention by attendance, the annual event offers dozens of subculture-specific programs.

The convention’s communications and public relations coordinator for the event, Ronnie, describes furries as “people that enjoy arts and culture centred around animals and animal-themed topics, essentially. Furnal Equinox in particular, we like to celebrate in a very visual and very […] artistic nature, where we have lots of arts and performances and crafts that go on, and people celebrate with lots of socialisation involved.”

Of the attendees, Ronnie told Wikinews “they come from all walks of life. They are people of all ages, sizes, all sorts of backgrounds, and they come together under one mutual interest, which is their love for animal culture.”

“Programming at Furnal Equinox involves[…] a lot of informational panels, so you can find out about topics from art and how to draw, or how to visually incorporate different elements into your artworks. You can also find panels that teach you how to write better, be a better fiction author for example,” explained the event representative.

At one panel Wikinews attended, members of its all-volunteer organising committee spoke of the year-long process of planning the event, and their reasons for committing such a significant amount of their time. Said one panelist, “if you’re happy, we’re happy.”

The largest hub of activity at the convention was a dealer’s room; nicknamed the “Dealer’s Den”, giving it an anthropomorphic twist. Vendors were selling original visual art, wearables like faux fur tails or ears, or things like jewellery or soap with motifs that would interest attendees.

The back area of the room was dedicated to a charity auction, with proceeds benefiting Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary. According to the convention website, the charity is “dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, and abandoned farmed animals. Their goal is to provide a safe, life-long home for all of their residents, and to educate the public about the true nature of farmed animals through tours, volunteer programs, and community outreach.”

Split into groups, some attendees played “Fursuit Games” in front of an audience, like trying to toss a ball into a garbage can. The activity made harder, of course, by the limited dexterity and vision the most of the costumes entail.

How Cardio Helps You Build More Muscle

byAlma Abell

Some out there who want to get into shape and build their muscles worry that if they do cardio, they are going to strip away their muscle tissue. The believe that cardio is going to be counterproductive to building a strong and athletic looking body. However, when cardio training is applied properly, it can help to stimulate even more muscle growth while helping to decrease the amount of fat you are carrying around with you.

There has been a range of studies that have shown the benefit of using aerobic training to help with an increase in muscle growth. The author of one of the studies, Matthew Harber, Ph.D., found that intense cardio training could help to provide just as much muscle growth as would be expected with resistance exercise.

Does this mean that you should only start doing cardio and expect to build strong, large muscles? No, but it means that you will want to make sure that cardio is incorporated into your workouts. Most will agree that the best course of action is to have both cardio and strength training in your workouts. It can give you everything you need.

However, it is important that the cardio is implemented into the workout program properly. Ideally, you will be working with a training program that has instructors who can provide you with these types of workouts. They can ensure that you are doing the right exercises at the right intensity for your fitness level to provide you with the best possible results.

Do not avoid cardio! It is not going to remove your muscles; it will increase your muscles, as studies have revealed. If you would like to get both strength and cardio training at the same time, consider The Max Challenge of Sayreville. This is a fantastic option for residents for Sayreville, NJ who want to get into the best shape of their life and who want to build their muscles.

You will also want to remember that the exercises you are doing are only one part of the equation for a healthy and muscular body. You also need to be sure that you are eating right. You need to have plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, but if you hope to build muscle, you are going to need to have plenty of healthy protein in the diet.
