Haze in South East Asia worsens

Friday, October 6, 2006

The acrid haze situation in Southeast Asia is worsening. Visibility has been severely reduced in neighboring countries and some schools have been closed due to the health hazard posed. The annual smoke season is caused by illegal slash and burn clearance of land in Indonesia, particularly the island of Borneo.

The haze has spread over 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) into neighboring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and even drifting to Guam in the western Pacific.

Aviation has been severely impaired in Indonesia, where in certain areas, visibility is only a mere 200 to 300 meters. Helicopter service in Malaysia’s Sarawak state, a key mode of transportation there, has been halted due to the poor visibility. A Mandala Airlines Boeing 737-200 carrying a 110 people had overshot the runway at Tarakan airport in Kalimantan province in Indonesia. The aircraft came partly to rest in a nearby swamp. Visibility at the time was around 400 meters, 600 meters short of Indonesian landing safety regulations.

Schools in Thailand, and Indonesia have also been forced to closed, and look likely to stay closed well into next week.

Air pollution indices around the region have also registered a spike in poor air quality. Sarawak state’s index came in at 106-188 with 100-200 being unhealthy. In Malay peninsula, the air pollution index in five states came in at 101-116. In Singapore, the Pollution Standards Index registered between 80-130 with 81-100 in the moderate range and 101-200 in the unhealthy range.

Wikinews journalist Timlee90 reports:

The air quality here in Singapore is so bad that I could feel the dust in my mouth as I was walking on the streets today. The air constantly smells of burning wood and visibility is never more than a kilometer. Singaporeans I know are concerned about the deteriorating situation.

Timothy Low, a Singaporean who’s just finished his national service says that he is concerned about the situation, “I can’t run to exercise. People with lung related problems have difficulty breathing; It causes tearing also.” The government here has advised citizens to reduce vigorous activity, especially those with existing heart or lung conditions.

The Indonesian government has been criticized by environmentalist groups such as Greenpeace, which claims that the allowed conversion of forests into cropland is the cause of the problem. The also call on the Indonesian government to “investigate and hold liable plantation companies responsible for slash and burn clearing”.

The Indonesian government has responded to the criticism that it is doing all that it can do. “We don’t know when we can put out the fires but we are working tirelessly and have spent billions of rupiah (hundreds of thousands of dollars) in our efforts,” Forestry Minister Malem Sambat Kaban said. “As for complaints from neighbouring countries, there’s nothing else we can do. We don’t cause the fires deliberately.”

In 1997-98, the haze cost the Southeast Asian region an estimated US$9.0 billion by disrupting air travel and other business activities

Scottish Midlothian car crash kills three

Monday, December 24, 2012

Two cars have been involved in a road traffic accident in the Scottish Lothian and Borders region, causing three fatalities and sending three to hospital. The incident occurred on the A68 road approximately 1.5 miles south of the Midlothian village of Pathhead when a Škoda Octavia and a Nissan Note travelling in opposite directions collided at approximately 0730 UTC today.

The Nissan, which was carrying five occupants, overturned and came to rest on its roof. Three male Buddhist monks who sat in the back of the car died at the site of the crash. The female driver of the vehicle managed to get out of the vehicle herself but another male passenger in the front of the car had to be cut free by fire service members. The two front-seat passengers as well as the male driver of the Škoda were hospitalised at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, although none of their injuries are considered likely to be fatal.

“This is a tragic incident,” Inspector Simon Bradshaw of Lothian and Borders Police said, “and we are currently in the process of carrying out inquiries in order to establish the full circumstances of the collision.” The A68 road close to the location of the accident was temporarily closed to allow police to investigate the incident, with traffic redirected to the B6370 road via the town of Gorebridge. The road has since reopened.

Home Building Exterior Style Choices

By Tammy Crosby-Editor, Dream Designs

The exterior style of your home is the fun part. It doesn’t require any further calculations, just simply what appeals to you. Most people prefer their home to be in harmony with the surrounding community and choose exterior styles that are appropriate to their region. To be safe, resale value should play an important part in the choice of exterior style. The five most prevalent styles in today’s market include:

Country: Nationwide this is by far the most popular style. Characteristics include a large, usually covered front porch or a wraparound porch, and a steeply pitched gabled roofline that runs lengthwise. The roofline is often punctuated by dormer windows and gabled wings, creating casual, informal living. The farmhouse style home is typically a rectangular or L-shaped home, often with two-stories. Horizontal siding is the typical material for county and farmhouse designs, although masonry or stucco is possible.

Traditional: This describes a multitude of classic designs including Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Cape Cod, Saltbox and Ranch designs each distinctly regional. Simplicity is a common characteristic of all traditional designs usually with small-paned or mullioned windows that are usually spaced symmetrically.

Victorian: This particular traditional-style home has strong historical origins with very intricate rooflines and the use of turrets, dormers, towers, bays and eyebrow windows. Ornate porches are a prevalent feature along with shingles or narrow-lap wood siding. This style is more appropriate for two-story homes, although one-story designs with Victorian features are available.

Mediterranean: Some view this style as traditional, others say it is contemporary, regardless, it’s popular in the Sunbelt states, particularly in California, the southwest and Florida. The exterior is traditionally stucco and includes tile roofs, broad overhangs, lower pitched roof lines and open-air verandas, courtyards and covered porches or lanais.

Contemporary: This broad category embodies many different styles and shapes of homes. Typically contemporary homes have bold geometric shapes, large expanses of glass, and windows that are not framed by shutters or other decorative trim, and rooflines that can be anywhere from flat to low-pitched to dramatically steep. Siding can be vertical or horizontal wood siding, stucco or masonry. There are really no rules with contemporary styles.

Other styles: although the above are the most prevalent choices there are a multitude of other styles many homeowners opt to adopt. These include Craftsman, European, Italianette, French or French Country, Tudor, etc. Also certain locations or uses can often produce a particular ‘style’; narrow lots, beach, mountain or vacation houses are examples.

Steps To Take After A Car Accident In Terre Haute In

byAlma Abell

If you’ve been in a Car Accident in Terre Haute IN, you may not know what to expect next. The first thing you should do is visit a doctor, followed by taking your car to be repaired or getting an estimate on the value of your car before the accident. After that, you may want to speak to a lawyer to see if they can help you get compensation for your case.

Seeking medical care after a car accident may be necessary. Even in cases where you don’t think you were injured enough to go to a doctor, you may want to go for a record of your injuries and to make sure that nothing happened that you can’t see. For instance, many people don’t feel the soreness in their bones and joints until a day or two after the accident. A doctor can find any other problems you didn’t notice, and even if they don’t you will have a medical record of the injuries from the accident.

Once you have seen a doctor, you should find out how badly your car has been damaged. If your car can be repaired, you can get an estimate for that repair from an auto repair company. If the car is too badly damaged to repair, your insurance company should let you know the value of the car to get it replaced. In either case, if you’re going to be visiting a lawyer for help, you’re going to want this written down.

After a Car Accident in Terre Haute IN, you may want to make sure that the person responsible for the accident compensates you a fair amount for the accident. By speaking with a lawyer, you can get help taking the other person to court and making sure that your compensation covers your medical bills, car repairs or replacement, and even the time you will have to miss from work to recover.

To find a lawyer, you can visit website of different firms in your area and set up consultation visits. By finding a lawyer who can help you after your car accident, you can make sure that the bills from your accident are covered, so you don’t have to worry about finding the money to cover the medical bills, car repairs, or time you lost from work.

According to the deal worth US$13.7 billion (£10.7 billion) the retail grocery store chain is to keep the Whole Foods Market brand name and John Mackey is reportedly to remain its CEO.

After the announcement, Amazon’s shares went up more than two percent and Whole Foods Market shares went up by about 28%. Shares of other grocery-selling chains like Kroger, Target, Sprouts Farmers and Costco experienced a dip after the announcement.

Amazon runs their own online grocery — Amazon Fresh — which started a decade ago in Seattle, Washington. Amazon’s? CEO Jeff Bezos said, “Millions of people love Whole Foods Market because they offer the best natural and organic foods, and they make it fun to eat healthy.”

Chloroform spill forces evacuation of building at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York

Monday, August 11, 2008

Buffalo, New York —The Buffalo Fire Department and Police were called to a hazmat situation at Canisius College on Main Street after security reported that a one gallon glass container containing chloroform broke, spilling about a pint onto the floor of the college’s science building.

According to communications by firefighters, who arrived at around 8:20 a.m. (eastern time), the glass container spilled on the third floor in room 318. As a precaution the building was evacuated and East Delevan road between Main Street and Jefferson Avenues was closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic while crews worked to clean up the spill.

At about 9:15 hazmat crews entered the room and began to clean up the chemical “using kitty litter” and fans to air out the room. They then sealed the material in a five gallon container. At 9:23 a.m. firefighters stated that they no longer detected the chemical in the air and began to pack up their gear.

Officials for the college assessed the situation and decided to keep the building closed for the day. “At 8:22am this morning the Public Safety Department and Buffalo Fire Department responded to a report of a chemical spill on the third floor of the Health Science Center. As the building is cleaned, the Health Science Building will remain closed today and reopen tomorrow morning,” a college official said to Wikinews, adding they could not confirm the firefighter reports.

Firefighters believe the container containing the chemical was knocked over while someone working with maintenance was cleaning the floors.

There are no reports of injuries, but WKBW reports that the maintenance worker was taken to Sister’s of Saint Mercy’s hospital not far from the college for observation.

Chloroform is a common solvent used in chemistry laboratories. Minimal exposure can cause dizziness, headaches and fainting while prolonged exposure can cause liver and kidney damage. It is considered a hazardous material and environmentally unsafe. Banned as a consumer product since 1976 in the U.S., it was previously used in toothpaste, cough medicines and pharmaceuticals.
