Thai police to wear ‘Hello Kitty’ armbands as punishment

Monday, August 6, 2007

Thai police officers are being punished by being forced to wear large, bright pink Hello Kitty armbands.

The armband, which features Hello Kitty sitting on top of two hearts, will be worn by police officers who commit minor offences. These include littering, lateness and parking in a prohibited area. The officers will also be forced to stay with the deputy chief all day in division office and will be forbidden to disclose their offences. However, police officers caught breaking the law will still be subject to the same penalties and fines as ordinary members of the public.

Police Colonel Pongpat Chayapan said, “Simple warnings no longer work. This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offense, no matter how minor. (Hello) Kitty is a cute icon for young girls. It’s not something macho police officers want covering their biceps. This is to help build discipline. We should not let small offences go unnoticed.”

Hello Kitty was created by the Japanese Sanrio Company in 1974. The character has been admired by both children and adults. It features on stationery, T-shirts, lunch boxes, Fender guitars and jewelry. Famous people known to have been spotted with Hello Kitty products include Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey.

Personalized Ways To Commemorate An Individual’s Life With The Help Of Cremation Companies In Hamilton, Oh

byAlma Abell

If a loved one will be cremated, the following ideas can be used to commemorate the individual’s life during a cremation ceremony. People who attend a unique ceremony will be able to honor a friend or family member in a positive manner and will be reminded of the recently deceased if they are given personalized tokens to bring home with them.

Engraved Candle Holders

Small candle holders can have an individual’s name or pictured engraved in each one’s surface. Afterward, a votive candle can be placed in each holder. When guests arrive for a cremation ceremony, they can be given one of the candle holders. If the guest of honor’s urn is set up on a table or shelf, each attendee can light their candle before placing their holder near the urn. All of the candles can remain lit throughout a service. Once the ceremony is over, guests can bring the holders and candles home with them.

Tree Of Life

A small, potted tree can be placed inside a room where a ceremony will be held. If small pieces of card stock have holes punched through them, guests can write special memories on them that relate to the person who has recently died. The memories can be displayed on a tree by inserting an ornament hook through each card before hanging all of them from a tree’s branches. Guests can view a decorated tree throughout a ceremony. When it is time to go home, memories can be taken off of the tree and given to the attendees.

Basic Jewelry Items

Hand-crafted pieces of jewelry can be designed that include an inscription. Lockets, pins, brooches, or bracelets can be selected that display an individual’s name, date of birth, date of death, or a symbol. Some types of jewelry have small urn holders installed in them. A few ashes will be added to the individual urns. An inexpensive piece of jewelry can be given out to each person who attends a ceremony. The mementos can be worn daily in order to remember the person who has passed.

More ideas for a cremation ceremony will be provided by people who oversee cremation Companies in Hamilton OH. Many cremation Companies in Hamilton OH will assist clients in order to help create ceremonies that are fitting and unique.

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Rescue efforts underway after China earthquake

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Humanitarian aid groups and Chinese military forces are beginning rescue operations in western China after a heavy 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Wednesday, that reportedly killed over 600 people and injured almost ten thousand.

The quake, which was centered around the remote town of Yushu, was largely destroyed by the heavy temblor, which occurred early in the morning as residents were waking up. The official death toll stands at 617, while 9,980 more were injured and an additional 313 reported as missing. The Chinese ministry of civil affairs reports that 15,000 houses had collapsed and 100,000 people – almost the entire population in the area – remain without homes.

The plateau where the earthquake hit is frequently visited by tremors; however, there are rarely many casualties due to its remoteness and small population. However, in May 2008 a heavy 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Sichuan foothills, killing 80,000 people.

Rescue efforts are underway, but impeded due to the area’s remoteness and landslides, which have blocked many roads in the area. Also a factor is the high altitude at which the area is located – about 4,000 metres above sea level (13,000 feet) – which could adversely affect rescue crews not used to being in such thin air. Sniffer dogs, for instance, who aren’t accustomed to working at high sea levels, could have a harder time detecting living people buried beneath rubble.

Power and telephone lines were also downed by the temblor, affecting communication, although the authorities commented that electricity and phone links have been repaired to tens of towns.

China’s state media reports that troops garrisoned in the Yushu county, with help from locals, have already rescued over a thousand people buried beneath debris.

Residents and troops garrisoned in the Yushu county have managed to pull out more than 1,000 people alive, according to Chinese state media. They are using shovels and bare hands.

Further exacerbating the situation is the weather: temperatures are freezing, and meteorologists predict sleet and wind to come within the next few days. Many people were forced to sleep outdoors, protecting themselves from the cold in blankets, or spending the night in vehicles.

Pierre Deve for the non-governmental organisation Snowland Service Group, was present in Yushu. He described the damage to Times Online, saying: “There are corpses everywhere on the street. They don’t have time to deal with them. There is a real need for medicine, for food, for water and for doctors. People are terrified that there will be another earthquake. They are also afraid that a dam that has been cracked will burst and flood the town.”

A local doctor, Karma Sherab, also commented on the problems the area is facing: “Most of the hospitals have collapsed and others had become dangerous. The only thing we can do is to clean the wounds in a simple way or simply amputate instead of curing.”

Chinese president Hu Jintao, meanwhile, said that he would be dispatching over 5,000 rescuers and soldiers to the scene of the disaster; the government has pledged over US$29 million worth of aid. Hu described the quake as being a “huge calamity”. He is also shortening his visit to a summit in Brazil to return to his country. “That is why I decided to bring forward my return to China,” he said from Brasilia.

Premier Wen Jiabao has visited Yushu to oversee relief work; he decided to delay a visit to southeastern Asia due to the disaster. “As long as there is the slightest hope, we will make efforts that are 100-fold. Your disaster is our disaster, your suffering is our suffering.”

The head of China’s disaster relief department, Zou Ming, says that 120,000 articles of clothing, 120,000 quilts, food, and close to 40,000 tents were to be sent to the disaster zone; he encouraged people to donate money to assist in longer-term relief work.

Meanwhile, some foreign countries have offered financial help; among them is Japan, which has pledged over one million dollars to disaster victims. The United States also said it is “ready to assist” if China requests international aid.

An Attraction For Management Students

Submitted by: Wilmer John

A case study for management students, the way in which the UAE has grown in multiple sectors and that too in such a short span of time is worth emulating elsewhere. Almost all the management schools in the UAE do have collaborations with almost all management schools that are part of the first 100 in the global ranking for business schools.

Instead of going to the US and other advanced countries, management students are now flocking to the scores of management schools that offer the same course material, renowned faculty and ambience right in their immediate vicinity. Thus the management schools in the UAE have been successful in attracting the best talent not only from the Middle East but also from the surrounding areas.

Even though some of the management institutes do offer a room for rent to those that seek it a few other institutes have included it as part of a package in which these aspects are also taken care of in the total tuition fees. Yet there are other institutes that have tie-ups with the prominent property portals so as to enable their students to find a room for rent at affordable rates.

Even though these management students come from well to do families and look out for rooms near to their place of study, there are candidates who do not mind spending extra to get rooms in their choice destinations. Not only that, once these management graduates pass out with high grades, they are much sought after by the billion dollar firms who wish to use their expertise to go still higher.

Consider the present industrial sector in the UAE. The automobile industry is dominated by almost all the major brands in the world. Some of the leading brands are having outlets outside their home country and that too only in the UAE and in other gulf countries. Next to their place of manufacturing, since almost all the major spares and services are being provided, technicians and other professionals are taking up long term assignments in the UAE.

To properly manage such servicing units senior professionals are hired from the US, Europe and Japan and these professionals most often look out for luxury homes for rent and they do not mind paying any amount of money to get luxury villas and apartments at key locations. Most often, they prefer to stay within striking distance of their place of work. Their willingness to pay any amount as rent is the main reason for the significant increase in rent rates for luxury apartments.

Another industry that has fuelled high rentals is the leather industry. The demand for world class leather products has resulted in a major shakeup in the erstwhile leather industry in the UAE. In place of leather in earlier times, another substitute was popular. But with the liberalization of the economy, newer leather products started flooding the market. Along with that the domestic industry entered into tie-ups with global brands and become production centres which could match the quality and standards set by brands that market their products in almost all parts of the globe. So literally speaking the global brands do not mind paying higher rents to own businesses at key centres to sell their products.

French ‘iPod bill’ seeks digital music player interoperability

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

Legislation pending in the French Parliament would require that music purchased online for use on digital music players be compatible across all players. It has become popularly known in France as the “iPod bill,” after the popular music player made by Apple Computer, and could pit France against Apple and other distributors of online music.

The National Assembly (lower house) and Senate (upper house) have passed two separate versions of the legislation. Both would reduce the penalties for piracy, require software companies to provide details on how their programs work, and create an agency that would have jurisdiction over digital copyright issues, including how often music can be legally copied by a customer for personal use and ensuring compatibility across devices.

Unlike the Assembly version, the Senate version does not contain provisions that would require manufacturers such as Apple and Sony to open all music sold on their platforms to work on players other than their own. Currently, the stores for Apple and Sony sell music only for use on their own players. Critics of the changes say that the Senate’s changes would defeat the purpose of the bill.

The two versions must now be reconciled in conference committee, a process that could take months.

Speaking in support of the bill, Assembly member Christian Paul said, “We oppose the idea that the seller of a song or any kind of work can impose on the consumer the way to read it, forever, and especially in the consumer’s home. Can we allow a couple of vendors to establish monopolies tightly controlling their clients and excluding competition?”

Christian Vanneste, the National Assembly sponsor of the iPod bill, said, “In France, there are two distinct mentalities. On one side is the backwards left, which is anti-American, and on the other is the right, which thinks that the U.S.A. shouldn’t be the only one with good ideas, and who want to compete with them.”

After the National Assembly’s vote in March, Apple denounced the measure as “state-sponsored piracy.” They refused to comment on the legislation after the Senate’s vote on May 10.

Francisco Mingorance, European policy director for the Business Software Alliance, said that the Assembly’s proposal is “about ripping off technology from those who developed it and putting it in the public domain.” The Business Software Alliance represents Apple, Dell, Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and other major computer hardware and software companies.

Things To Avoid With A Self Directed Ira Real Estate Plan (Part Two)}

Things To Avoid With A Self Directed IRA Real Estate Plan (Part Two)

by

Gordi

SHIRLEY and NEIL decided to buy a duplex using their self directed IRA real estate plan, so they instructed their IRA custodial manager to buy the duplexes jointly using both of their IRAs to borrow 60% of the purchase price from a national non recourse lender. The units were fully rented and the net operating income was enough to make the mortgage payments each month. About six months after buying the units a fire started in one of the kitchens and smoke damage meant both unit were made uninhabitable, until the damage had been repaired and the units cleaned up.

Of course Shirley made a claim on her insurance immediately, but the insurance money did not come through in time for the IRA to meet the next mortgage payments. Shirley decided to make the payment personally so her IRA would not be in arrears. This could have been considered an excess contribution, as Shirley was only entitled to make $5000,00 in contributions per year. She should have paid the money to her IRA and let that pay the mortgage. The next month the insurance company paid the claim money to her IRA. If Shirley had another month of no cash flow she could have made contributions to her IRA and claimed them as excess contributions, subject to an excess contribution filing and 6% potential penalty annually, until the excess was removed or the contributions she was entitled to make yearly added up to the amount of the excess. NEIL had an investment property that he had purchased at a good price. However, he realized that his tax benefits would be much better, if his self directed IRA real estate plan owned the property. He knows that he can not sell his property to his IRA without A Prohibited Transaction Exemption. And he knew that that would not be forthcoming, so he decided to sell the property to his friend Edward. Edward was not aware that Neil was trying to bypass the Prohibited Transaction rules, Neil just told Edward that he needed to transfer some assets, and he would sell the property to Edward for a nominal amount and Neil would pay Edward for helping him out, The Title company would record the transaction in Edwards name and Neil would pay all the fees and taxes. When the sale had gone through Neil directed his IRA custodial manager to buy the property from Edward. The IRA custodial manager worked in with the Title Company to follow Neils directions. While this was going on Edward rang up the IRA manager and asked how IRAs could buy property as he had not heard of this before, Edward mentioned he was just doing this deal with a friend and he would like to do the same thing. The manager told Edward he would look at the transaction more closely and would get back to him, and yes, he could use his IRA to buy and sell property. Neil was right, the Dept of Labor would not grant him a Prohibited Transaction Exemption. The property was not an arms length transaction and Neil was in the process of entering into a prohibited Transaction with his IRA and was defying the rule that said you can not do something indirectly that you can not do directly. Edward told Neil what he had learned from the manager, but NEIL already knew, as the manager had rung him up straight away. The upshot was that NEIL lost $5000,00 because he bent the rules, Edward didn’t want the property so he gave that back. Neil having received an lesson about bending the rules, kept on the straight and narrow after that, and went into a partnership in a self directed IRA real estate plan with Edward. As usual if this all seems too much or you just can not be bothered, there is a simpler more TURNKEY solution to investing in real estate and IRAs.. Just click the url at the bottom of this article and go to my website. There you will find much more information.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.
