Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

Example of a MALDI-ToF spectra. (Image: Krista McGrath, Keri Rowsell, Christian Gates St-Pierre, Andrew Tedder, George Foody, Carolynne Roberts, Camilla Speller & Matthew Collins)

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

Watch the entire interview with Dr Naomi Martisius.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Logo of the Health Services Union

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Why Hire A Shredding Service?

byadmin

Every business owner knows how important it is to properly dispose of documents containing proprietary information. When those hard copies are no longer needed, the most common approach is to shred them. While it is possible to invest money in shredding equipment, a better approach is to hire a professional to take care of this important task. Here are some of the benefits that come with hiring a Shredding Service.

Employees Are Free to Take Care of Other Tasks

On the surface, buying a shredder may seem like a good investment. After all, employees can take on the task of shredding documents if necessary. The thing to remember is that every minute an employee stands at the machine shredding printouts and other hard copies, that is a minute the employee could be working on something else. Rather than tying up employees with this type of task, have a Shredding Service destroy those unwanted documents. Doing so means all of the employees can devote themselves to tasks that help generate more business volume.

Secure Disposal

With a professional taking care of the shredding, there is no chance of the documents finding their way into the hands of competitors. This is because professional shredders typically use equipment that reduces the documents to extremely small pieces. Not all the shredders available at the local office supply house will produce the same results.

In addition, the team who arrives on the site are not likely to hold out a document and see who would be interested in purchasing it. Their goal is to maintain a good business relationship with the customer. That means making sure every document scheduled for shredding is completely destroyed.

Aiding the Recycling Effort

Not everyone realizes that shredding companies recycle those shredded documents. Once they are reduced to tiny bits, the paper can be turned in at a recycling center and used to create new paper products. As an alternative, the customer can keep the tiny shreds and use them as packing materials. With either approach, those old documents serve a purpose other than taking up space in a landfill.

Business owners who are interested in learning more about shredding should Call Us Today for a FREE Consultation & Estimate. After learning more about the benefits and the cost, the owner will want to get started with the plan right away.

UAE launches national authority for scientific research

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its first national authority for scientific research (NASR) to coordinate and fund scientific research in the country.

The national authority for scientific research was announced on March 7 by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE minister for higher education and scientific research. NASR will begin with an annual budget of AED100 million (approximately US$27.2 million). The authority hopes to receive additional contributions from the public and the private sector.

NASR will look to fund research projects in various fields, including engineering, technology, medicine, water and agriculture, proposing specific projects to be competed for by researchers at universities and private research institutes.

“Projects are going to be selected to help promote scientific research and the growth of UAE society and we will compare them with international scientific research criteria,” Gulf News quoted Al Nahyan as saying at the launch.

NASR will also train scientists and develop programmes for promoting public science awareness. It will also coordinate with government authorities on the issue of intellectual property rights, by providing advice on how companies and research centres should go about protecting their discoveries in the form of patents or licenses. It will also provide scholarships for researchers in the UAE to work on international research programmes, and organise national scientific conferences. NASR forms part of the UAE’s strategic plan to improve higher education and scientific research.

Zakaria Maamar, associate professor at the College of Information Technology at Zayed University, UAE, told Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) that, “This initiative is another boost to the research and development activities that are carried out in the UAE. It will definitely provide researchers with the appropriate funds to sustain such activities and promote best practices in the community.”

Said Elnaffar, assistant professor at the college of information technology at the United Arab Emirates University, told SciDev.Net that, with this initiative, the UAE is taking the lead and setting a good example by building a strong development infrastructure founded on knowledge discovery and research.

California Companies Group Health Penalty

Submitted by: Dennis Jarvis

Small Group Moving to Individual California Health Insurance

There’s a big question yet to be answered on whether employers will just pay a penalty rather than provide group health insurance once the Exchange plans are in full force. This a great question and it’s still hard to figure out which way the market will go. Let’s at the pro’s and con’s of this decision both from the employer’s point of view and from the employee’s.

The new group landscape for California health plans

First, we have to establish what we mean by group health plans since the Health Reform bill only applies to certain companies. The bill mainly applies to what’s termed large group companies. This will be defined as companies with more than 50 employee equivalent hours. Okay, what is that? Let’s say you have 100 employees that all work part time..say 20 hours per week each. That company would actually be subject to the law since the 20 hours times 100 employees is the equivalent of 50 employees at full time. Most companies do not realize this equivalence calculation yet and they’re in for a big surprise. What’s interesting is that most employees are actually employed by small companies in California with the average size being 2-5 employees. We usually think that large companies are the main employers but small business really drives our employment in the U.S. Small companies will not be required to offer health insurance to employees or suffer from penalties. That leaves larger sized companies to consider implication of offering or not offering group California health coverage. What about them?

Enter the stick

This is the basic set-up. Effective Jan 1st, 2014, larger companies can either offer eligible group health coverage to their employees or pay an annual penalty of $2000 per employee. The first question to ask is what do we expect the premiums to be for group health plans per employee? Group health premiums in California will go up due to mandates and health reform rules but we don’t expect them to go up nearly as fast as they will on the individual family market due to Guaranteed issue. Guaranteed issue means that a person cannot be declined for health coverage due to health. The California group health market has had guaranteed issue for years now due to AB1672. This goes a long way to explaining why group health premiums were roughly double those of equivalent plans on the individual market. This doesn’t bode well for the new individual health plans and is a major reason why we’re starting to hear the term “Rate Shock” regarding that market. There will be increases in group health premiums…probably around 10-20% in addition to the standard annual inflation. So let’s estimate (very rough at this point) that the middle option plan will run $400/monthly for an employee (age 45). That’s $5K annually for which the employer may pay between 50-100%. This is the consideration an employer will have to make.

How to compare the penalty versus premium.

On a straight cost analysis, it makes sense to just pay the penalty and employers that currently do not offer coverage are more inclined to go this route. Keep in mind that the employees still must secure (and pay) their own individual health insurance. This is why employers that offer coverage now will likely continue to unless they’re just getting coverage or themselves (and family). Some companies right on the cusp of small or large group may decide to reduce payroll in order to avoid the penalty. Many large companies will likely continue to offer coverage but require more cost sharing since the premiums will go up. The small mom and pop companies (of which there are many) will likely drop group health and buy individual family coverage since most of them bought group due to the inability to qualify based on health.

Your companies options for health insurance

Ultimately, this is a good time to walk through your companies situation and rates with a professional. You can instantly quote the new group health plans (available Summer of 2013) to compare with an potential penalties. We’re happy to walk you through this process of course.
