Increasing House Value By Installing Laminate Flooring}

Submitted by: Steven Magill

Working my way through college, I found it easier to do odd jobs that required manual dexterity rather than sitting an office since most of my days were spent sitting down, listening to lectures, doing assignments and the like. I felt that my muscles needed the exercise and the pay for manual labor was good and had a flexible time. A friend of mine had a construction and home development company and offered me a part time gig installing laminate flooring. At that time, laminate flooring was new technology, something different and interesting to do.

As compared to installing hardwood flooring, it was much easier and simpler and the net effect and look was likewise comparable to hardwood flooring itself, though this will always be debated by hardwood purists. Installing laminate flooring was even relatively easier on my part since the houses that I was to work on were new ones, those recently built by my friend and his company so in essence, all I had to do was go to the room designated, get the square footage, add around 5% to the area, and then get the materials and work on it. I would work on an almost completed room which was almost done save for the installation of the electrical outlets and the base boards.

Most of the time, I would choose to work on odd hours like lunchtime or on weekends and Sundays when nobody was there. Installing laminate flooring on a whole house could take a day or so. It wasnt hard to do but the trick there was getting the right measurements and maximizing the cut of the laminated flooring. Since I was essentially given a full roll of laminate flooring, I would find the best way to cut the pieces to get a lower percentage of wastage. To me it was like solving a non verbal puzzle, akin to those pieces of plastic strips which could be made into different shapes, some toy which was popular at the start of the 80s decade whose name I fail to recall. A lot of the time spent was actually not in the installation but in the preparation process.

Though I had the measurements since most of the units were the same, it was the cutting of the laminate flooring that took most of the time initially. Then once I had a couple of houses done, I decided to precut most of the pieces and then just label and number them for quick reference. Every Sunday, I would start around 9 am doing the second floor first. It was a lot of squatting, kneeling and bending work so I would take a five minute break every hour and a half. After a while, I just wanted to finish the work on a per house basis and then take my break after a house was done. It wasnt as easy as I thought. Still it felt nice to see the product of your work.

One time I got to view one of the houses I had done as it became a model house and showroom of sorts. The blend of the right furniture and finishing details and interiors made the house more than tempting to purchase. Installing laminate flooring did its part to make the house more livable.

Can I Set Up My Trampoline On Uneven Ground?}

Submitted by: Roger Ramjet

This question is a very important question and can be critical when it comes to your familys safety. You can put your trampoline on uneven ground and we will discuss how you can do it in this article.

1st Option Dig Your Trampoline In

This is quite a simple operation and it basically involves digging your trampoline legs into the ground on the uneven surface. We recommend only digging a trench the width of the trampoline frame itself and only a few inches deep. This means then that you are able to drop that part of the frame down into the trench you have dug and it will level the trampoline out.

Things to look out for though are, make sure the trampoline is not dug too deep into the ground. This can easily be done and you have to take into consideration the travel distance of the trampoline bed while in use. The best thing to do is have a few people stand on the trampoline bed and then measure the distance from the frame to the bottom of the sag on the bed. This will give you some idea as to how deep you can sink the trampoline. When you have dug the trench, its best not to fill it once the trampoline is in. This will allow the trampoline frame to move while in use which is what its designed to do. If you seal the trampoline into the trench you make cause frame flex and damage the trampoline itself. Overall it is quite a simple procedure, with the right tips on how to do it. We have written a similar guide that may be of use regarding how to sink your whole trampoline into the ground. This article can be accessed here:

2nd Option Use A Trampoline Anchor Kit

A trampoline anchor kit is a useful tool which is cheap and efficient, its basically made up of tie downs and an anchor screw. This means that you can secure the trampoline to a slope using the tie down system and anchor it to the ground screws. This is the most popular option over digging a trampoline trench and certainly a cheaper option. When securing the trampoline anchor ensure that you sink the ground screw into firm ground, which in turn means that the screw is secure and will not give when under stress. When purchasing the trampoline anchor kits, we recommend that you purchase 2 or more kits as the more you have the safer the trampoline will be.

In general we recommend that people think carefully about setting a trampoline on uneven ground as it can cause injury to the bouncer if not set up properly. However if done properly the trampoline can be a great source of exercise and fun for the whole family. The simplest way to put your fears no rest and to receive the right advice is to call up a trampoline specialist who will be happy to talk you through the process and ensure that your family stays safe.

The History Of The Resolute Desk

By Pamela Upshur

The Resolute desk was made in the 19th Century and built using timbers that came from the British ship. The British barque-rigged ship Resolute became stuck in the Arctic ice and was abandoned by its crew in 1854. An American whaling ship found it the next year and brought it to Connecticut. Congress rescued and restored the ship which was then given to Queen Victoria as a token of peace and goodwill.

When the ship was decommissioned in 1879.. The British government arranged to have a desk made from its timber. The desk was built by William Evendan, a skilled joiner employed in Chatham, England. The Queen presented the richly carved “Resolute desk” to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 as a gift. Every president since Rutherford B. Hayes has used the desk in the White House Oval Office since except Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush.

Independent museums also display replicas of the Resolute desk including a full-scale replica of the Oval Office at the American Village in Montevallo, Alabama, the Quality West Wing Foundation Museum in Corona, CA, the Treehouse Children’s Museum in Ogden, Utah, and the American Presidential Museum in Branson, Missouri.

Five presidential libraries display exact replicas of the Resolute desk including the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Vally, California, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia, the George and Barbara Bush Center at the University of New England, Maine, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The desk has twice been modified since 1880. President Franklin D. Roosevelt order a hinged front panel in order to hide his wheelchair. He often placed a waste basket in front of his desks. He preferred people not see his leg braces. The hinged front panel was commissioned in 1944, but was not delivered until 1945 after Rooselvelt’s dealth. The desk originally had a space in the center called a knee hole. President Roosevelt had the knee hold fitted with the panel with the Seal of the President carved on it. President Roosevelt didn’t live long enough to see the modification. President Truman liked it decided to have the hinged panel installed anyway.

The second modification was made during the Ronald Reagan Administration. President Reagan brought a chair he used from the capital in California. President Reagan knees bumped into the desk whenever he moved. A separate, uniform base was added to the desk to accommodate Reagan and his chair.

Ms John F. Kennedy had the height of Resolute Desk increased by adding approximately 4 inches to the base to adjust it to President Kennedy’s height. She also had it sanded and refinished.

If you compare the photographrs of John F. Kennedy, Jr. under the desk, and the photograph of President Eisenhower in the Broadcast Room, you can see a difference in the height of the desk.

Presently, the desk has been in the Oval Office for the past 16 years. The Resolute Desk is an important part of history and is still used today by President President Obama.

Michelin Increase Forklift Trucks Tyre Life For James Jones And Sons

Independent sawmiller and leading timber supplier James Jones and Sons has switched to a 100 per cent Michelin policy on its Lockerbie Sawmill industrial machinery fleet after recording impressive tyre life gains.

The 150-year-old firm, based in Larbert, Stirlingshire, first tried Michelin’s XZM tyres when its Lockerbie Log Yard Manager, Iain Gale, realised tyre bills for its industrial fleet were extortionate.

“We were using a variety of different budget tyres at the time,” says Gale. “We had a few Michelin tyres on our forklifttrucks, but on the whole we were buying according to price, thinking it would save us money. In fact, the reverse was true.”

James Jones’ tyre supplier suggested running a recorded trial of a set of Michelin XZM tyres on a Liebherr timber handling machine – and it was found that, where the budget tyres had been lasting an average of 1,800 hours, the new Michelin tyres clocked up 8,000 hours.

Following the success of this first trial, James Jones has had Michelin XZM tyres fitted across the fleet of eight Liebherr timber handlers, nine forklift trucks and three side loaders.

Further results have shown that, where the budget tyres on James Jones’ side loaders were lasting between 200 and 600 hours, Michelin’s XZM tyres achieved up to 2,000 hours, increasing lifespan by up to ten times on some machines.

“The results have been unbelievable,” says Gale. “We have hardly any punctures now, and downtime has been significantly reduced. We’re saving more than we ever dreamt we would.”

Michelin’s XZM tyres feature a heavy-duty tread design and damage-resistant sidewalls, maximising uptime and productivity. Their radial construction absorbs shocks for enhanced vehicle protection, and their reinforced buttressed shoulders improve stability and handling. They have an extra-deep tread, which extends their lifespan and reduces operating costs.

James Jones and Sons has recently opened a further Sawmill at Lockerbie, increasing production from 100,000m3 per year to 250,000m3. The company now runs four sawmills and one engineered timber facility.

The company operates from six sites in Scotland. Its products, which include pallets, packaging and fencing, are used in the construction and agricultural industries throughout the UK.
